CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Maryland field hockey squad's postseason run ended Sunday with a 1-0 overtime loss to third-seeded Virginia in the NCAA Field Hockey Quarterfinals at the Cavaliers' Turf Field in Charlottesville.
The Terrapins (17-4) dominated the first half, controlling possession and outshooting the Cavaliers 5-4 in the first 30 minutes of play. Maryland had four penalty corners to none for Virginia in the first two periods but was unable to capitalize. The teams stayed scoreless at halftime.
"I couldn't be more proud at the brand of hockey that we finished this season playing, head coach Missy Meharg said. "The work rate, the trust, the attention to the game plan is the memory of the season. A couple of post corners by Mayv Clune and Bodil Keus could have put us in position to own the game. Virginia is a great athletic team. Our tactics were spot-on. We're living the life of sport."
Virginia controlled most of the second half, taking 12 shots in the third and fourth quarters, but Maryland's defense held strong. Terrapin goalkeeper
Noelle Frost made eight of her career-high 11 saves in the third and fourth periods.
Virginia (18-4) took seven shots off of four consecutive penalty corners to start the fourth quarter. Forty-one seconds into the quarter, the Cavaliers knocked a loose ball into the cage, but after an umpires review, the goal was overturned.
The Cavaliers scored 5:28 into the golden goal, 7-vs.-7 overtime period when Annie McDonough scored off a penalty corner.
Maryland ended its season at 17-4 and as Big Ten regular season champions for the fifth time in six years in the league. The Terps made the NCAA Quarterfinals for the 24th time in 25 seasons, dating back to 1995.
This marked Maryland's 25th straight NCAA Tournament appearance - the longest active streak in the country. The Terps have made 31 total NCAA Tournament appearances and are 64-24 (.727) all-time in NCAA Tournament games, which is the highest Tournament winning percentage in the nation. Head coach
Missy Meharg is 60-23 (.726) all-time in NCAA Tournament games, the best percentage among active Division I coaches, and second only to Maryland's Sue Tyler, who was 4-1 (.800).
