COLLEGE PARK, Md. -Â The No. 7 Maryland men's basketball team is set to open its 101st season Tuesday, Nov. 5, as it hosts Holy Cross in College Park at 7:30 pm. The Terrapins have won 42 consecutive home openers dating back to the Lefty Driesell era in 1977-78. Maryland is 6-2 overall in season-openers in head coach
Mark Turgeon's tenure.
STORYLINES
• The Maryland men's basketball team is set to open a new century of tradition after celebrating its 100th season in 2018-19. The Terps are fresh off advancing to the NCAA Round of 32 after accumulating a 23-11 record. Maryland has finished in the top-5 of the Big Ten Conference in 4-of-5 seasons as members of the league.
• The Terrapins had two players named to the preseason All-Big Ten team: senior guard
Anthony Cowan Jr. and sophomore forward
Jalen Smith. Cowan Jr. was a unanimous selection. He was also named a preseason Second Team All-American by Blue Ribbon Yearbook.
• Twin forwards Makhel and
Makhi Mitchell are one of two sets of twins in power-5 conference basketball, joining Kalim and Keylan Boone of Oklahoma State. The Mitchell twins are identical and hail from Woodrow Wilson HS in Washington, DC.
• Junior
Darryl Morsell played his best basketball over the last five games of the season last year, averaging 12.4 points, dishing 16 assists and committing just three turnovers. Morsell has started 52 games through his first two seasons and is the Terps' premier lockdown defender.
• Maryland returns seven of eight rotation players from last season (players who played 12.0+ mins/g), having lost only NBA Draft selection
Bruno Fernando.Â
• Head coach
Mark Turgeon is heading into his ninth season as head coach of the Terrapins, having led the program to the NCAA Tournament four of the last five seasons. Turgeon has posted a 180-92 record at Maryland, with his .662 win percentage ranking second in program history behind only Lefty Driesell (.686). Turgeon is 430-251 (.631) in 21 seasons overall as a head coach.
• Senior guard
Anthony Cowan Jr. has the chance to etch his name into the top-10 of a number of program career statistical categories. He currently ranks ninth in free throws made (407), t-10th in assists (437), 12th in 3-point field goals made (150), and 23rd in career points (1376). He is one of just four players in Maryland history to record 1,300 points and 430 assists (John Lucas, Johnny Rhodes, Greivis Vasquez).
• The Terps have been ranked in the top-10 of virtually every national preseason poll, in addition to being ranked in the top-2 of nearly every Big Ten Conference poll.
• Sophomore
Jalen Smith was particularly effective rebounding on the offensive glass as a freshman, with 40-percent of his 225 rebounds coming at that end. His 225 rebounds were the fifth-most for a freshman in program history. "Stix" also had five double-doubles, which were the third-most for a freshman in Maryland history.
• Maryland returns 80.6% of its scoring from the 2018-19 season, including leading scorer
Anthony Cowan Jr. (15.6 ppg). In fact, the Terps return 10 of their 11 top scorers from a season ago.
Jalen Smith averaged 11.7 points as a freshman, while
Eric Ayala,
Darryl Morsell and
Aaron Wiggins combined for more than 25 points per game.
• Maryland's resident "ironman" is senior
Anthony Cowan Jr., who has started in all 99 games since stepping foot in College Park. He has averaged 33.5 minutes/g, including 37.0 mins/g as a sophomore when he led the Big Ten. Cowan is looking to break Keith Booth's consecutive start record (126) which was set over the course of 1994-97.
•Â
Anthony Cowan Jr. (70),
Aaron Wiggins (62) and
Eric Ayala (52) combined to make 184 3-pointers last season. Cowan's single-season total ranked seventh in program history, while Wiggins' .411 3-pt pct. and Ayala's .406 3-pt pct. ranked 11th and 15th in single-season history, respectively.
