COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 13 Maryland men's basketball team returns from its holiday break Sunday, Dec. 29, at noon when it hosts Bryant in its final non-conference contest of the season. Maryland is a perfect 8-0 in games immediately following the holiday break under
Mark Turgeon, and has not lost the first game after Christmas since the 2003-04 season.
STORYLINES
• The Terps checked in at No. 20 in this week's edition of the NET rankings, and currently have the 8th-ranked strength of schedule. The Big Ten Conference has 12 teams in the NET top-50 - the most of any conference in the country. The other power-6 conferences have the following number of top-50 teams in the NET: Big East (8), Big 12 (6), Pac-12 (5), ACC (4), SEC (3).
• Maryland and Bryant are set to meet for just the second time in history. The teams first met on Dec. 27, 2008 in College Park as Greivis Vasquez scored 19 points in a 72-51 Terrapin victory.
• All-American candidate
Anthony Cowan Jr., who officially walked in his graduation on Dec. 18 after graduating in three years, has scored at least 16 points in seven of his last eight games, and 20 points in four of those games. Cowan leads the Big Ten with 55 free throws made this season.
• Sophomore
Jalen Smith is tied for the Big Ten lead and ranks seventh nationally with seven doubles-doubles through 12 games this season. He posted five double-doubles last season as a freshman. Additionally, Smith has recorded at least two blocks in 10 of 12 games this season.
• The Terps lead the Big Ten and rank 8th nationally in rebounds/g (42.7). Sophomore
Jalen Smith is a big reason for the success, leading the conference and 16th nationally with 3.83 offensive boards/g. Thirty-nine percent of Smith's 346 career boards have come on the offensive glass.
• Senior
Anthony Cowan Jr. is currently tied for 15th all-time in scoring (1,573) at Maryland with Nik Caner-Medley (2002-06). He needs just 35 points to pass Ernie Graham for 14th in history. The Bowie, Md., native is 7th all-time in assists (487). He is also 4th in free throws made (462), and needs nine to pass the legendary Len Bias for third. Cowan is one of three players in program history with 1,500 points and 450 assists (Greivis Vasquez, John Lucas).
