COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Kaila Charles had 23 points and 11 rebounds to help No. 12 Maryland beat No. 23 Michigan 70-55 in the Big Ten opener for both teams on Saturday night.
Charles went 10-for-17 from the floor with three assists and three steals. She picked up her second straight double-double.Â
Shakira Austin,
Ashley Owusu and
Stephanie Jones added 10 points each for Maryland.
 Â
"I thought obviously Kaila set the tone from the tip," head coach
Brenda Frese said. "She looked like the All-American that she is. It was just her energy for us making a ton of great plays.
Â
"Michigan is always a well-coached, tough, physical team. You're going to be in battle every time you play them and I thought it was a 40-minute battle all the way. They pushed us to the end, but I'm proud of our toughness. Love the fact that our defense, our rebounding were just consistent in a game like this. That's what you got to be able to have as a great team. There's going to be nights, uncharacteristic shots that weren't falling for us tonight, but we could rely on both our defense and rebounding."
 Â
The Terrapins (10-2, 1-0 B1G) led from late in the first quarter until the Wolverines (9-3, 0-1) tied it at 34 on Kayla Robbins' pair of free throws with 4:58 left in the third. Maryland responded with an 8-0 run, including six points from
Shakira Austin, to take the lead for good.
Â
The Terps won the fourth quarter, 28-17, to pull away. Owusu scored eight of her points in that final period.
Â
Taylor Mikesell's 3-pointer with 4:54 left in the fourth quarter was the first 3 of the game by either team, each having missed its first nine attempts from the arc up to that point.
Blair Watson followed Mikesell's 3 with another, making it 61-48 with 3:41 left.
Â
Amy Dilk led Michigan with 18 points. Robbins added 16 and Naz Hillmon scored 15 for the Wolverines.
Â
Coming into Saturday's game, Michigan was +8.5 on the glass to lead the Big Ten in rebounding margin. The Terrapins won the battle on the glass, 43-35.
Â
Maryland owns the series over Michigan at 8-1 and is 5-0 against the Wolverines at the XFINITY Center.
