COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Maryland football team gathered for its annual team awards ceremony on Sunday night at The Hotel in College Park.
Members of the team, staff and program supporters enjoyed an evening of socializing and recognizing the accomplishments of the 2019 Terrapins football team. All in attendance enjoyed a year-end highlight video and had the chance to send off the senior class one final time.
"I'm more excited now to be the head coach of the University of Maryland than I was when I took the job a year ago because now I know exactly where we are and the things we need to do to move the program forward," said Maryland Head Coach
Michael Locksley. "Like any family, when we get knocked down, we bond together. We learn to not waste a failure and we rally. And that's what my mission is for this team. We rally.
"Winning programs have great discipline and great character and they have tremendous pride," Locksley continued. "I have tremendous pride for the name on the front of the jersey. That's the only one that matters. As long as we're all on the same page, there's no doubt in my mind that we can get this program where we want it to be."
Among the big award winners for the night was senior defensive back
Antoine Brooks Jr. The Second Team All-Big Ten selection was chosen as the Most Valuable Player on the team, the Defensive Player of the Year and named one of the three team captains.
Joining Brooks as team captains, which was voted on by the players, was senior linebacker
Keandre Jones and senior offensive lineman
Ellis McKennie. Jones was also selected as the Alvin L. Aubinoe Unsug Hero Award, while McKennie was honored with the James M. Tatum Memorial Award (Lineman of the Year).
Junior running back and return specialist
Javon Leake also walked away with some hardware, earning Offensive Player of the Year and Special Teams Player of the Year honors.
The first recipient of the Jordan McNair Memorial Award was junior running back
Jake Funk. Jordan's parents, Marty McNair and Tonya Wilson, were on hand to deliver the award, which is given to the player who reflects the spirit of Jordan by showing great professionalism athletically and academically, dedication to his team, strength in the face of immense adversity, as well as courage and conviction to do the right thing.
