COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Sophomore
Shakira Austin had a career-high 25 points and 13 rebounds, and No. 9 Maryland shook off a midweek loss to rout Loyola (Md.) 105-45 on Sunday at the XFINITY Center.
Senior
Stephanie Jones and sophomore
Taylor Mikesell both added 20 points for the Terrapins (8-2), who dropped a 66-59 decision at N.C. State on Thursday.
Austin went 11-for-13 from the field and 3-for-3 at the foul line with two assists, a block and a steal. Mikesell made six three-pointers – a new career high. Senior
Kaila Charles added 13 points with nine boards.
"I just love the response out our team today. Obviously, after our last game you kind of want to see what our team is made of," head coach
Brenda Frese said. "Shakira's game today I thought she came and approached it the right way yesterday in practice and not surprised by what she did today for us career-high, and then Taylor (Mikesell) as well, with her career-high in threes."
Stephanie Karcz led the Greyhounds (1-8) with 12 points.
After getting outrebounded in Thursday's game at N.C. State, the Terrapins bounced back to dominate the glass, 53-22, over the Greyhounds.
"I just thought from the jump the aggressiveness and the commitment to the glass was an area we really challenged the team with and I thought they had a terrific response," Frese said.
Maryland never trailed, with Mikesell making three 3-pointers in the first five minutes. The Terps led 20-10 after a quarter and broke away with a 20-0 run over more than six minutes in the second period.
Maryland improved to 26-3 against its in-state rival and has won 19 in a row against the Greyhounds, including a 17-0 mark under coach
Brenda Frese.
Next, the Terps will take a 10-day break for final exams. They will return to action with an 11 a.m. matchup at Georgia State (1-7) on Wednesday, Dec. 18. The Terps-Panthers game will be streamed on
ESPN+.
