COLLEGE PARK, Md. - In the midst of a daunting stretch of games that includes 7-of-9 away from home, the Terrapins return to College Park Tuesday evening for a top-25 matchup against No. 12 Purdue at 6:30 pm on Big Ten Network. The Terps are 5-0 in Big Ten play at home this season.
STORYLINES
• The Terps are 2-1 in top-25 matchups at home this season, including wins in its last two. Maryland defeated then No. 24 Nebraska and then-No. 22 Indiana in back-to-back home contests in early January.
• Maryland will enjoy five days of rest between its last game against Nebraska (2/6) and Purdue (2/12), marking its longest stretch between games since late December.
• Junior guard Anthony Cowan Jr. posted 18 points and six assists when the Terps narrowly lost to Purdue, 62-60, earlier this season on Dec. 6 in West Lafayette. Both teams played stout defense down the stretch, as neither side made a field goal in the final four minutes of action.
• Bruno Fernando (13pts/19rebs) and Jalen Smith (18pts/11rebs) teamed up in the front court to lead Maryland to a commanding 60-45 road win at Nebraska Feb. 6. It was the first time a pair of Terps recorded double-doubles in the same game since Jake Layman and Diamond Stone on Jan. 12, 2016. The 19 rebounds were also a career-high for Fernando.
• Speaking of double-doubles, Bruno Fernando notched his sixth consecutive double-double and 15th of the season against Nebraska. The streak is tied for the fourth-longest in program history. The other Terps with streaks of at least six games: Jordan Williams (13), Len Elmore (12), Joe Smith (7, 6) and Tom Roy (6).
• Maryland's 15-point win over Nebraska marked its fourth double-digit road win of the season, having also defeated Rutgers (14), Minnesota (15) and Ohio State (14) by more than 10. The four such wins match the amount of double-digit victories it had in its first four seasons in the Big Ten combined.
• The Terps remain one of the best rebounding teams in the nation, ranking second in the country and first in the Big Ten Conference in rebound margin (+10.3). The Terps have been out-rebounded just twice in 24 games this season, and have out-rebounded its last three opponents by an average of 12.7.
• Bruno Fernando was named one of 10 players to the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award list (top center), becoming the first Terp to earn the honor in since its inception in 2015. Also on the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Midseason List, Fernando currently leads the Big Ten Conference (6th nationally) in field goal percentage (.662), and ranks second in rebounds/g (10.7) and blocks/g (2.0).
• Terp Tendencies: Maryland has won all 18 games when leading with 5:00 to play; Maryland is 11-0 when holding opponents under 40-percent shooting; Maryland is 15-2 when Jalen Smith scores 10+ points.
• The Terrapins boast one of the youngest lineups in the country in terms of experience, ranking 349th out of 353 teams according to KenPom.com.
