BALTIMORE, Md. – Led by a defensive effort that saw the Terps allow their lowest goal total in 16 years, the No. 2 Maryland women's lacrosse team (4-0) ran past UMBC, 18-1, on Wednesday night.
Â
"We saw really positive things from everyone that played tonight," said head coach
Cathy Reese. "Everyone contributed tonight, and that was awesome. Thought we were fantastic defensively and caused a lot of turnovers to make it hard for UMBC to get on the offensive end. Everyone that stepped on the field brought a great sense of energy."
Â
Maryland was dominant from the start in the midweek contest against the Retrievers, only allowing eight shots on goal. Senior
Megan Taylor made five saves on seven UMBC shots in the first half, only allowing one goal. In the second half, the Terrapin dominated possession, winning nine of 10 draws and only allowed one UMBC shot.
Â
UMBC's one goal is the lowest total by a Maryland opponent since 2003, when the Terps also beat Virginia Tech by a score of 18-1. The 17-goal differential was Maryland's largest win since 2011, when the Terps beat George Mason, 21-2.
Â
Offensively, the Terps were led by graduate student
Erica Evans and freshman
Julia Hoffman who each tallied four points by way of three goals and one assist. Junior
Lizzie Colson led the draw effort, tallying a career-high nine.
Â
Hoffman wasn't the only freshman that contributed offensively as
Hannah Glaros and
Darby Welsh both also tallied their first career goals, ending the game with two apiece. Glaros also picked up a groundball and draw control while Welsh notched two draws. In the second half, the freshmen class went on a 6-0 run of their own to push the lead from 11-1 to 17-1.
Â
Freshman
Maddie McSally also saw her first action as a Terp, replacing Taylor in goal for the second half and not allowing a goal on only one shot. Sophomore
Madison Hine finished the game in goal.
Â
Senior
Jen Giles, junior
Hannah Warther and sophomore
Grace Griffin each posted two goals of their own, with all but Giles' second coming in the first half. Sophomore
Catie May, who earned her first career start tonight, assisted on two goals and got her first goal of the season on the Terps last goal of the night as part of a three point performance.
Â
With tonight's win, Maryland moves to 12-0 all-time against UMBC.
Â
The Terps will head to Long Island on Saturday to play Hofstra for a noon opening draw.
