Terps Fall To George Washington 5-2

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – In Maryland's first game of the Carolina Classic, the George Washington Colonials (10-2) proved to be too much to overcome. The Colonials had won – and shut out – their first two opponents of the tournament on the way to their seventh straight win, and carried that momentum into their game against the Terps.

Sierra Lange got the W in the circle for the Colonials, and pitched 20 scoreless innings to open the Carolina Classic before freshman Taylor Okada homered off her in the bottom of the seventh inning for the first home run of her career.

Sydney Golden got the start in the pitcher's circle for the Terps and pitched the first 3.2 innings, allowing four earned runs on nine hits before being replaced by Kiana Carr, who pitched the final 3.1 innings only allowing one hit and not letting up any runs.

Maryland's offense wasn't able to get much going off George Washington's ace, only getting one base hit in the first two innings. Conversely, the Colonials got off to a hot start, scoring two runs in the second and two more in the third.

The Terps' offense remained fairly flat while George Washington added another run in the fourth, and both teams were quieted by the others' pitchers until Maryland's last chance to get something going in the bottom of the seventh.

Taylor Okada crushed one deep over the center field wall and scored JoJo McRae to cut the deficit to three, but the effort would prove to be too little too late and the Terps would fall to George Washington 5-2.

Maryland's game against Florida Atlantic was called in the bottom of the fifth due to weather, despite the Terps holding an 11-2 lead. The game will not be finished at a later date or rescheduled.

Maryland faces North Carolina tomorrow at 6 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on WatchESPN.
