Golden, Brashear Reach Milestones In Terps' Loss To UNC

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Despite Maryland's 11-5 loss to North Carolina, senior pitcher Sydney Golden tossed her 200th career strikeout and junior outfielder Amanda Brashear notched her 100th career hit in the Terps' second game of the Carolina Classic Saturday night.

Taylor Okada led off with a single and went 2-4 on the day, increasing her batting average to an exceptional .435 on the season. Despite stealing second and advancing to third on a passed ball, Okada was stranded in scoring position as the Terps wouldn't score in the first inning.

Sami Main got the start in the circle for Maryland and pitched 2.2 innings, letting up four hits and one earned run. Sydney Golden replaced her in the bottom of the third and pitched the remaining 3.1 innings, allowing seven hits and three earned runs.

The Tarheels got on the board first, scoring three runs in the second down two outs. An error and a wild pitch brought in the first two runs, and a solo homer was the third and final run of the inning. UNC would then add five more runs in the third, again down two outs, and increased their lead to eight.

Maryland responded in the bottom of the third with five runs of their own – three runs coming from Taylor Wilson's first home run of the season – and two more on an Anna Kufta 2-RBI double as she increased her season RBI count to 22.

A scoreless fourth inning kept the Terps in it, but North Carolina wasn't finished and tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fifth, stretching their lead again to 11-5. Maryland didn't have an answer and dropped its second game of the Carolina Classic.

The team returns tomorrow for the last game of the weekend vs. UNC Greensboro at 11:30 a.m.
