DELAND, Fla. – Maryland dropped its last road non-conference game of the season today as the Skyhawks from UT Martin bested the Terps, 3-2.
The Terps were quiet offensively as they had been all weekend, only scoring twice on seven hits in the last game of the Stetson Invitational. Maryland hit .250 throughout the last five games, its lowest tournament total of the season.
Sydney Golden got the start in the circle, pitching five and a third innings of scoreless ball while holding UT Martin to just two hits. Amelia Jarecke made her fifth appearance of the season in relief for Golden, holding the Skyhawks to no hits, but walking two batters which – in addition to a fielding error – helped UT Martin get three runs on the board and take the lead.
Maryland scored first in the top of the third after Taylor Wilson hit a leadoff double and then was brought home on a Taylor Okada RBI single. Okada got into scoring position after Brashear was walked, but the Terps would leave the pair on base.
A Bailey Boyd double, Wilson single and a Gracie Voulgaris walk loaded the bases in the fourth with just one out, but Maryland couldn't make anything of the opportunity and left all three baserunners stranded.
Taylor Wilson hit a solo homer – her third of the season – in the top of the sixth and extended the Maryland lead to 2-0. The Terps however would leave the bases loaded to end the inning, despite forcing a UT Martin pitching change.
Things got away from Maryland in the bottom of the sixth as UT Martin scored three runs to which Maryland wouldn't respond. Their first batter reached on an error and Golden walked the next one, then Jarecke replaced Golden in the circle. Jarecke walked another and loaded the bases, and a bases-loaded walk brought in the first run of the day for the Skyhawks. UT Martin would score the tying run on a fielder's choice and the winning run on a wild pitch.
The Terps play at home for the first time this season next Thursday as UMBC comes to town and kicks things off for the Maryland Invitational.
