Fernando, Cowan and Smith Garner All-B1G Honors

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Sophomore Bruno Fernando, junior Anthony Cowan Jr. and freshman Jalen Smith earned All-Big Ten honors as announced Monday evening by the conference offices.

Fernando was named a First Team selection by the coaches and media, in addition to garnering All-Defensive Team honors. Cowan was named a Second Team selection by the coaches and media and Smith was one of five players named to the All-Freshman team.

Fernando earned First Team and All-Defensive Team honors after a historic season for the Terps, ranking among the nation's best in a number of categories. The Luanda, Angola, native ranks seventh nationally and third in the Big Ten with 20 double-doubles and is 13th nationally and first in the Big Ten shooting 62.4% from the field.

He also ranks 13th nationally and second in the Big Ten with 10.5 rebounds/g, including a league-best 11.4 rebounds/g in conference play. He is also third in the Big Ten in blocks/g (1.9) and is shooting an astounding 82-percent from the free throw line in conference action (fourth in the Big Ten).

Fernando's 15 double-doubles in conference action led the Big Ten, while his 20 double-doubles rank tied for third all-time for a single season in program history. Fernando is just the third Terrapin to receive First Team Big Ten honors along with Melo Trimble (2014-15, 2016-17) and Dez Wells (2014-15). Fernando is the only player in the Big Ten to garner First Team and All-Defensive Team honors this season.

Cowan is now a two-time All-Big Ten honoree after receiving Third Team honors last season as a sophomore. Cowan is leading the Terps in scoring for the second straight season ranking ninth in the conference in scoring, averaging 15.6 points per game in Big Ten play.

The Bowie, Md., native also led the Terps in assists, averaging 4.3 per game against Big Ten foes and was seventh in free throw percentage (81.7%). Cowan had five 20+ scoring outputs in conference play, including a four-game stretch of 20+ points from January 8 to January 18.

Cowan became the 28th 1,300-point scorer in program history this season when he eclipsed the milestone with a 15-point outburst against Penn State on Feb. 27. Cowan is just the sixth player in Maryland history to record at least 1300 points and 400 assists in a career, joining John Lucas, Walt Williams, Johnny Rhodes, Greivis Vasquez and Trimble.

Smith earned a spot on the All-Freshman team after an impressive rookie season with the Terrapins in 2018-19. The Baltimore, Md., native averaged 11.2 points and 6.6 rebounds per game in conference play, while earning Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors three times throughout the season.

Smith becomes the fourth Terrapin to garner Big Ten All-Freshmen Team honors since Maryland entered the conference, joining Trimble (2014-15), Diamond Stone (2015-16) and Fernando (2017-18).

Nicknamed "Stix" his 6.6 rebounds per game were third among all freshmen in the B1G, while also racking up 21 blocked shots, 12 assists and 10 steals in conference games.

Smith posted four double-doubles on the season, which is tied for the third-most in program history by a freshman since 1989-90. The others to achieve the feat were Joe Smith (20 – 1993-94), Jordan Williams (8 – 2009-10) and Stone (4 – 2015-16).

The Terrapins return to action Thursday afternoon when they face either Nebraska or Rutgers in the second round of the Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament in Chicago.
