DELAND, Fla. – Maryland went 2-0 on the day after beating UT Martin, 5-4 and shutting down Bethune-Cookman, 3-2 behind Sami Main's complete-game one-hitter. The Terps were quiet offensively in both matchups, but a career performance from Kiana Carr through 4.2 innings and 2.1 innings of scoreless ball from Sydney Golden sealed the deal as the Terps took down UT Martin. Sami Main also had a career day in the second leg of the doubleheader, as she pitched seven innings holding the Wildcats to just one hit and no earned runs.
Game One – Box Score
Maryland got on the board early in the first game of the day as Sammie Stefan hit an RBI double, plating Brashear. The run would be the sole run of the inning as the Terps left the bases loaded to end the frame.
The Terps would extend their lead in the second as Amanda Brashear hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to score Carr, then an Anna Kufta RBI groundout plated JoJo McRae and made it 3-0 through two.
UT Martin got two back in the fourth, cutting the Maryland lead to one going into the bottom of the inning, but a Kufta RBI single made it 4-2 through four.
The Skyhawks kept it interesting, scoring two more to tie it up in the top of the fifth. Maryland didn't have an answer in the bottom half of the inning, but Golden entered the game and retired three straight batters in the top of the sixth to keep the Terps in it.
Maryland made it 5-4 in the bottom of the sixth after McRae got her first extra-base hit of the season then Taylor Okada drove her in on an RBI single. The Skyhawks wouldn't score in the top of the seventh and Sydney Golden struck out the UT Martin batter swinging for the game-winning third out.
Game Two – Box Score
Despite some sloppy play in the infield, Sami Main's career day in the circle kept the Terps in the game which was tight wire-to-wire.
There wasn't a hit in the game for either club until the top of the sixth, when Okada and Brashear hit back-to-back singles. Neither team had anything going offensively up until that point.
Bethune-Cookman took the lead first, scoring two unearned runs on two errors in the fourth inning. However, they wouldn't put any more runs up for the rest of the game.
In the top of the sixth, Shelby Younkin pinch hit with two outs and the bases loaded, and emptied the bases on a hard-hit chopper which the pitcher bobbled and made an errant throw to first. Younkin would round all the way to third, but wouldn't make it on time.
The Wildcats would get their lone hit of the day in the bottom of the sixth, but the baserunner would be stranded as Bethune-Cookman couldn't make anything of the opportunity.
Maryland added one more hit in the seventh but couldn't add to its lead. Sami Main then sent the Wildcats down in order in the bottom of the frame to seal the victory for the Terps.
Maryland will play its tournament finale tomorrow against UT Martin at 10 am.
