#2 Terps Set for Clash at #5 Northwestern

COLLEGE PARK, Md. --  The second-ranked Maryland women's lacrosse team will travel to No. 5 Northwestern for a big conference battle between the two remaining undefeated teams in the Big Ten on Thursday night. The game will air on the Big Ten Network with Dean Linke and Sheehan Stanwick Burch on the call.

HOW WE GOT HERE
• The senior duo of Jen Giles (four goals, one assist) and Megan Taylor (10 saves) led the way as the No. 2 Maryland women's lacrosse team (14-0, 4-0 B1G) cruised to a 14-3 win over No. 7 Michigan (13-1, 3-1 B1G) in a battle of unbeaten teams on Saturday evening.
• Head coach Cathy Reese became the all-time winningest women's lacrosse coach at the University of Maryland as the No. 2 Terps (13-0) handled No. 8 Virginia, 16-6 last Wednesday night.
• A season-best 13 different players scored goals as the No. 2 Maryland women's lacrosse team  routed Rutgers, 20-3 two weeks ago. Junior Brindi Griffin led Maryland, tying a career-high with four goals to lead the way for the 13 different goal scorers.

MEET THE TERPS
• The Terps are led by the midfield corps of senior Jen Giles, transfer Erica Evans and sophomore Grace Griffin. Giles leads the Terps with 40 goals, 17 assists, 57 points and 24 groundballs. Evans and Griffin are third and fifth on the team with 36 and 33 points apiece. Evans has 27 goals and nine assists while Griffin has 26 goals, seven assists and leads the team with 11 caused turnovers. 
• Maryland is once again backlined by junior  Megan Taylor, who has had an incredible start to 2019, leading the country with a .614 save percentage at 132 saves to 83 goals allowed. Taylor was named the B1G Defensive Player of the Week in each of the past six weeks and earned three IWLCA National Player of the Week honors.
• The attack is spearheaded by junior Kali Hartshorn and senior Caroline Steele. Hartshorn is second on the team in both points (43) and goals (32) and leads the team with 85 draw controls. Steele has averaged 2.7 goals per game and had the game winner in overtime against No. 3 North Carolina. 
• Senior Julia Braig and junior Lizzie Colson guide the Maryland defense. Braig leads the Terps with 11 caused turnovers while Colson is second on the team in groundballs (22), draw controls (67) and caused turnovers (10). .

REESE BECOMES MARYLAND'S ALL-TIME WINNINGEST COACH
• In last Wednesday's 16-6 win at No. 8 Virginia, head coach Cathy Reese became the program's all-time winningest coach, breaking her former college coach and eight-time National Champion, Cindy Timchal's record.
• Reese, in her 13th season at the helm of the program is now 262-21 as the head coach of Maryland and has won four National Championships. 

MARYLAND DAIRY INTRODUCES CATHY REESE'S VICTORY SWIRL
• The Maryland Dairy, located in the Stamp Student Union has made an ice cream for head coach Cathy Reese, "Cathy Reese's Victory Swirl" debuted it at their shop on Monday. 
• The ice cream, which Reese picked out herself, includes vanilla ice cream, reeses peanut butter cups, reeses pieces and a chocolate fudge swirl.

AWARD TIME FOR MEGAN TAYLOR
• Senior Megan Taylor has won a handful of awards over the past weeks, garnering Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors in each of the past six weeks and IWLCA National Player of the Week honors on March 13 and 20.
• Taylor now leads the NCAA with a .614 save percentage, having saved 132 shots to only allowing 83 goals. The senior also leads the country in goals against average at 6.88 goals. Taylor and Maryland have the second best scoring defense in the country, only allowing 6.43 goals per game.
• Over the six week time frame, Taylor has recorded a .647 save percentage at 99 saves and only 53 goals allowed. Taylor's streak of winning the award is the longest by any Maryland player since the Terps joined the conference in 2015. 
• With her 600th career save a few weeks back against Ohio State, Taylor is also the current NCAA save leader, having the most in her career of any goalkeeper in the country.

SEVEN TERPS ON TEWAARATON WATCH LIST
• Seven members of the No. 2 Maryland women's lacrosse team, the most in the country, were named to the initial Tewaaraton Watch List, as announced by the Tewaaraton Foundation.
• Graduate midfielder Erica Evans, four seniors: Julia Braig, Jen Giles, Caroline Steele and Megan Taylor and junior defender Lizzie Colson were all selected for the watch list. Last week, Kali Hartshorn was added to the list. 
• The Terps have the most players in the country named to the watch list. Each Terp named to the list was selected as a preseason All-American by Inside Lacrosse, while Braig, Giles and Taylor were named Maryland's Big Ten Players to Watch. 
• Taylor has now been selected for the Tewaaraton Watch List in three straight seasons. It's the second appearance for Braig, Evans, Giles and Steele, while Colson and Hartshorn makes an appearance on the watch list for the first time. Last season, both Braig and Taylor were named one of 25 Tewaaraton nominees.  

SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
• No. 5 Northwestern stands at 9-3 this season and 3-0 in the Big Ten with wins over #16 Duke, #5 Penn, #17 Johns Hopkins. The Wildcats are on a five game winning streak after falling to No. 1 Boston College a few weeks back. 
• Maryland is 15-6 all-time against Northwestern.
• Last year, the Terps and Northwestern met for the Big Ten Regular Season Title, and Maryland used an offensive flurry, scoring 20 goals, to take down the Wildcats and hoist the trophy. Five players recorded hat tricks in the win.
