EVANSTON, Ill. – The Maryland baseball team racked up a season-high 18 hits in an 13-8 victory over Northwestern at Rocky Miller Park Friday afternoon.
What to Know
- The Terrapins (17-16, 4-3 Big Ten) exploded for nine runs in the first four innings. Maryland's 18 hits were its most since the Terps had 19 against Penn State on April 1, 2017.
- Maryland scored three runs with two outs in the first. Freshman Maxwell Costes doubled home Randy Bednar before Justin Vought singled to score Costes. Josh Maguire's double to center topped off the Terps' first.
- Senior AJ Lee, who finished 3-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored, extended the lead in the second with an RBI single that scored freshman Benjamin Coles, who had led off the inning with his first career triple.
- Maryland's five-run fourth was propelled by a stretch of six straight hits to begin the inning, including four doubles, Maryland's most in a single inning this season. Lee's two-RBI double started the scoring before Bednar and Taylor Wright followed with RBI doubles. Costes' single to centerfield capped the Terps' big inning.
- Right-handed pitcher Hunter Parsons labored at times during his start, giving up seven runs in the first four innings. Parsons then gave the Terps big outs, throwing up three consecutive zeros from the fifth to seventh.
- Maryland scored single runs in the fifth and sixth on a Lee RBI single and a Caleb Walls infield single.
- Bednar put the game away in the ninth, slugging a two-run shot to left, his team leading sixth of the season.
- LHP Sean Fisher gave up an unearned run in the eighth before RHP John Murphy shut the door in a scoreless ninth.
- Maryland had seven players with multi-hit games, its most in a single game this season.
Other Stuff
- Bednar leads the team in multi-hit (12) and multi-RBI games (8).
- Lee and Vought have both reached base in eight consecutive games, tied for the team lead. Costes reached base four times today and has now reached in six straight.
- It was Cowles' first career game with multiple extra base hits. Maguire now has eight career hits of which four are for extra bases.
- Maryland is now 2-2 all-time in Evanston, Ill. The Terps and Wildcats played a three game series in 2015 in Evanston.
- Maryland is now 2-0 as a University in Evanston this weekend after women's lacrosse team's victory over the Wildcats on Thursday night. They played inside and outside. Won anyway. Props.
- Multiple Maryland players lost their hats during play as the wind gusted up to 35 MPH at Rocky Miller Park. Cowles lost his twice, but we think the freshman was just trying to show off his flowing locks. The freshman simply smiled when pressed about the situation. Thankfully, no players blew away and the game was finished in a tidy (considering all the runs) 2:56.
