MAINEVILLE, Ohio – The Maryland women's golf team wrapped up competition in the Big Ten Championships Sunday at TPC River's Bend in Maineville, Ohio. Sophomore
Virunpat Olankitkunchai finished tied for fifth and was named to the All-Championship Team.
Â
Olankitkunchai and junior
Xiaolin Tian entered Sunday's second and final round one stroke over par and two strokes off the individual lead. Both shot a 73 in the first round Friday, then Saturday's second round was cancelled due to poor weather conditions.
Â
Olankitkunchai shot a 69 Sunday and finished with a score of 142, which was two strokes under.
Â
She picked up her sixth top 10 finish on the year. Olankitkunchai's career scoring average is 72.61, which is currently the lowest in program history. That mark breaks the record set by Tian, another
Diana Cantu recruit, last season at 73.08.
Â
"I am extremely proud of Virunpat for yet another great performance this year," head coach
Diana Cantu said. "Six top 6 finishes and 7 top 13 finishes this year. It is very impressive.
Â
"After completing this tournament, Virunpat breaks Xiaolin's low season scoring average record at Maryland. I am confident that she will continue to make history with her two years left on the team."
Â
Sophomore
Charlotte Lafourcade took 11 strokes off her first round score of 80 to shoot a 69 Sunday. She tied for 33
rd with a score of 149 (80-69).
Â
Tian shot a 76 Sunday to earn a combined score of 149 (73-76) as well.
Â
Sophomore
Laura Van Respaille finished with an overall score of 151 (77-74).
Â
Senior
Ludovica Farina earned a combined score of 156 (78-78) and senior
Ludovica Scandroglio finished with a 160 (80-80).
Â
As a team, the Terrapins finished eighth out of 14 and just five strokes out of the top four. They went even as a team on Sunday to finish with a score of 589 (301-288).
Â
"I am disappointed in our finish this year," Cantu said. "Our first round put us far back in the field and with the second round cancelled, we had less time to catch up. This just shows that each day we have to come out and play as if there's no tomorrow."
Â
The NCAA Women's Golf Championships selection show will air on the Golf Channel on Wednesday beginning at 4:30 p.m. ET.
