Stefan Hits Terps' First Grand Slam Since 2016

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- After Sammie Stefan battled an 18-pitch at bat in game one of the doubleheader at Rutgers, Sammie Stefan knew she was able to hit the ball off the Rutgers' pitching staff, but strikeouts and groundouts limited her from getting on base. But in her last at bat of the doubleheader, with the bases loaded, Sammie Stefan launched one well over the left-field fence at the Rutgers Softball Complex and hit the first grand slam for Maryland since Emily Libero did so in 2016 vs. St. Louis.

Unfortunately for the Terps, Stefan's four-bagger didn't provide enough insurance as Maryland would drop its second game of the doubleheader in extra innings.

In game one of the doubleheader, Sydney Golden retired the first 12 batters she faced, blanking the Scarlet Knights until the fifth inning. Maryland got on the board first via an Anna Kufta RBI single in the third inning, but the one run would be all the Terps could get across. Rutgers evened it up in the fifth inning, and built their lead to three runs, which the Terps couldn't come back from.

In the second game of the twinbill, Victoria Galvan kept the Scarlet Knights hitless until the fifth inning - at one point retiring five straight Scarlet Knights batters on five pitches. Maryland's offense was firing on all cylinders, holding a six-run lead heading into the fifth inning. Once Rutgers finally started getting the ball in play, they roared back and forced extra innings. Maryland would succumb to a walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth which sealed the deal and secured the sweep for Rutgers.

Maryland travels to Lincoln, Neb. this weekend for a three-game series vs. the Huskers in the second-to-last series of the season. Sunday's game will be televised on the Big Ten Network at 12 p.m., while Friday's and Saturday's matchups wil be featured on BTN Plus.
