COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Former Maryland All-American Melo Trimble, who was the leading scorer in Australia's National Basketball League (NBL) this past season, was on campus Friday morning working out with former teammate
Dion Wiley.
Â
Trimble was a popular man in the hallways of the XFINITY Center, as Maryland staff and Terp Hosts went out of their way to check in on the Upper Marlboro, Md., native.
Â
"It seems like everyone misses me … and I miss them too," Trimble said with a smile. "I always reminisce about being in College Park and think about the good times at Maryland. Walking by the weight room I see my poster and it just brings back so many memories."
Â
The poster Trimble is referring to, of course, is a massive photo of himself knocking down a shot in the Terps' massive win against Georgetown in 2016.
Â
Trimble is fresh off the heels of an impressive season in Australia with Cairns Taipans of the National Basketball League, where he earned Second Team All-NBL honors.
Â
Life in Australia was a bit of an adjustment for Trimble, but he quickly got the hang of things.
Â
"I'm enjoying every minute of my time in Australia," Trimble said. "When I first got there, there was an adjustment period getting used to the culture. Being in America, you just know whats going on here. However, in Australia everything is different and when I got there I was able to get that confidence again and be myself."
Â
Trimble was able to turn his success into a new opportunity as he signed with Melbourne United in the offseason, which is regularly one of the league's strongest clubs.
Â
"Melbourne just has a great culture of winning and I'm a big city guy so it's a great fit for me," Trimble said. "I'm used to playing in front of a big crowd coming from Maryland and the atmosphere at Melbourne games reminds me of that. I'm excited to get out there and win."
Â
Before Trimble heads to Melbourne for the season in September, he'll likely be around College Park working out frequently.
Â
The 2019-20 men's basketball team is garnering plenty of preseason expectations and Trimble offered a bit of advice, having dealt with the high expectations in 2015-16.
Â
"They just need to avoid complacency and get better every day," Trimble said. "I really don't know too many of the guys outside of Anthony [Cowan], Eric [Ayala] and Stix (
Jalen Smith), but I just want them to be leaders and know that they have to push their team to have a great season."
