It has been a tremendous span of days for former Maryland All-American
Bruno Fernando and Jake Layman, who both recently signed new deals.
Fernando officially signed with the Atlanta Hawks on July 7 and will team up with former Terps Alex Len and
Kevin Huerter, while Layman was acquired by the Minnesota Timberwolves July 8 in a sign-and-trade deal with the Portland Trail Blazers.
Fernando was in a bit of limbo following the 2019 NBA Draft on June 20, as he was selected 34th overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in a pick that had been proposed as a trade to Atlanta. Due to NBA rules, organizations were not permitted to make trades official until July 6.
"Bruno is a talented, young big man who has improved during his time at Maryland," said Hawks General Manager and Head of Basketball Operations Travis Schlenk. "He has a nice combination of size, length and athleticism, and a strong work ethic, so we're excited to add him to our roster."
Layman, who helped lead the Terps to the 2016 NCAA Sweet 16, spent the last three seasons in Portland. He had a breakout season in 2018-19, appearing in 71 games (33 starts) and averaging 7.6 points and 3.1 rebounds while shooting 50.9% from the field.
Summer League Update
The Terps have a pair of former players currently competing in NBA Summer League action, as
Bruno Fernando is getting his footing with the Hawks and Robert Carter Jr. is on the Los Angeles Clippers roster.
Fernando was all over the court in 26 minutes of action, posting five points, seven rebounds, four blocks and a pair of assists in the Hawks' loss.
Carter has not appeared in game action yet.
Both the Hawks and Clippers return to action tonight, July 9.
