ATHENS, Ga. – Maryland dropped its first game of the 2019 Bulldog Classic Friday evening, falling to Auburn 4-0.
The Terrapins (2-1) managed 11 shots in the game and forced five saves from the Tigers' keeper, but couldn't find the back of the net for the first time this season. Â
Maryland withstood some early attacking pressure from the Tigers (1-1), fending off pair of corner kicks to keep the game scoreless.
Auburn broke through in the 24th minute, getting a goal from Jessie Gerow before Sarah Houchin followed with another Auburn score just a few minutes later.
The Tigers put an exclamation point on the end of the first half, drawing a foul in the box to earn a penalty kick. Houchin slotted the PK to push the Tiger lead to 3-0 at the break.
Auburn quickly added to its lead at the beginning of the second half, getting another penalty kick opportunity after a yellow card in the box to go up 4-0.
The Terps managed to lock in from then, keeping Auburn at bay while outshooting the Tigers in the second half 8-6.
Maryland will return to action at the Bulldog Classic this Sunday, September 1 when the Terps battle host Georgia at noon. The game will be broadcast on the SECN+. Â
