COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Head coach Ray Leone tallied his historic 300th win Sunday afternoon, as Maryland (4-2-2) shut out Princeton (2-3-1), 3-0. Led by two goals from Alyssa Poarch and two assists from Jlon Flippens, the Terps clinched their fourth victory of the season.
Leone becomes just the 27th active Division I coach to reach the milestone, which includes head coaching stops at Berry College, Creighton, Clemson, Arizona State and Harvard before coming to Maryland.
"It's hard [to describe]," said Leone when asked what the milestone meant to him. "Because when I told [the team] it's not about me it's about all the girls I've coached. I've been thinking about that – the first team, my Berry College girls, all they meant to me – I wouldn't be here without any of them. And just all the different people along the way. I've been getting different pictures and texts from different people and they don't even know this was going on and it just makes me smile. I've been lucky." Â
The Terps came out strong, scoring their first goal against the Tigers in the opening five minutes of the game. A long pass up the field from Flippens, who made her first appearance of the season in the win, allowed Poarch to beat her defender and land one in the right corner of the goal off of her left foot.
Poarch delivered again 10 minutes later, scoring an unassisted goal in the 16th minute of play. The Middlewtown, Del. native blew past several defenders on the right wing, carrying the ball up the field before scoring with another lefty shot.
The Terps took a total of eight shots on goal in the first half while allowing Princeton just three, taking a 2-0 lead into the locker room.
Going into the second half up by two, the Terps looked to stretch their lead. The Tigers were not giving up, challenging Erin Seppi in the second half. Seppi made a tough save as Marissa Hart shot low center, but Seppi was there to stop the attempt on goal.
The Terps kept the pressure on and added a bow on the day in the last fifteen minutes with another goal, coming from Emily McNesby. Flippens notched another assist by heading the ball straight to McNesby as she found the net low left, and put the Terps up 3-0.
Next up, the Terps begin Big Ten Conference play as they take on the Wisconsin Badgers at 7:00 p.m. Friday, September 20.
