EVANSTON, Ill. – The No. 2-ranked Maryland field hockey team beat No. 13 Boston College, 3-1, Friday in its first game in the Big Ten/ACC Cup at Northwestern.
Freshman
Emma DeBerdine and sophomore
Linda Cobano scored their first career goals as Terrapins in the victory. Maryland (3-0) picked up its first win over a ranked team this season.
"We're really happy with our performance today," head coach
Missy Meharg said. "We'll celebrate tonight because Boston College very strong, as they always are. They are well-coached and this is a very good win for us. We were able to bring in good players off the bench and get them into the game. Scoring in three of the four quarters is also nice to see."
The Terrapins got on the board first, with just 2:58 left in the first quarter. Senior
Madison Maguire collected a loose ball and sent it into the net for the score.
Just under three minutes later, Boston College (1-2) tied the match when Jaime Natale deflected in a shot off a penalty corner.
With 4:00 left in the second quarter, freshman
Belle Bressler brought the ball up the left side and sent it to fellow freshman
Emma DeBerdine along the baseline. DeBerdine sent a shot towards the cage and the ball deflected in for her first career score.
Maryland led Boston College 2-1 at the half.
In her first game eligible, Cobano scored her first goal as a Terrapin off a penalty corner with 6:21 left in the match. Maguire and senior
Jen Bleakney assisted on the play.
Maryland took 14 shots to Boston College's eight and had eight penalty corners to the Eagles' four.
Senior goalkeeper
Noelle Frost made three saves.
