#17 Maryland Dominates Michigan, 77-49

ANN ARBOR, Mich.  –  Dominant defense led No. 17 Maryland to a 77-49 victory at No. 24 Michigan Sunday. The Terrapins forced 22 turnovers and led for 37 minutes.

Blair Watson led Maryland (12-4, 3-2 B1G) with 20 points off six three-pointers with four rebounds and four steals. Freshmen Ashley Owusu and Diamond Miller came in off the bench and combined for 33 points. Owusu scored 18 with six assists and Miller added 15 with five boards.

Maryland forced 22 Michigan turnovers and forced 22 points off them. The Terrapins also won all four quarters.

"Really proud of their response and their resiliency," head coach Brenda Frese said. "I just thought they took great ownership of how hard it is to win on the road and came out ready to fight. That's what you want to be able to see from your team.

"The defense starts at the head with Blair. She sets the tone for us defensively. All five were connected and aggressive to be able to turn them [Michigan] into a lot of turnovers. The intensity was a huge difference for us in this game."

Michigan (11-5, 2-3) took the first lead with a bucket 12 seconds in. Stephanie Jones scored to tie the game 2:31. Eight seconds later, Watson nabbed her first steal and scored to give Maryland the lead. The Terrapins never looked back.

Miller subbed in midway through the first quarter and scored seven straight points for the Terrapins, who led 21-12 at the end of the period.

Maryland's defense continued its pressure, forcing eight Michigan turnovers in the second quarter to lead 37-21 at halftime.

Michigan's Naz Hillmon scored nine points in the third quarter to cut the Terps' lead to 15 with 3:05 left in the period. Watson responded with a three to hold off the Wolverines.

Hillmon finished with 15 points to lead Michigan and Kayla Robbins added 11 for the Wolverines.

Blair Watson has made 179 career threes. She recently moved to fourth on Maryland's all-time list.
