COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland Softball Head Coach
Mark Montgomery added two Junior College signees to the Class of 2020 on Wednesday. This extends this year's class to nine, as seven future Terps signed on National Signing Day in November.
Ruby Butler (Snohomish, Washington)
JUCO: Bossier Parish Community College
Position: Shortstop
As a freshman at Bossier Parish, Butler played in all 61 games, hitting at a .402 clip. She hit 10 home runs and had a total of 53 RBIs, receiving First-Team All-Conference honors as well as First-Team All Region for Region XIV in Louisiana. Butler was also named an Easton/NFCA All-American Scholar Athlete.
The Shortstop graduated from Snohomish High School where she was a three-time First-Team All-Conference selection and won a state championship her sophomore year.
Montgomery's Take: "Ruby is an extremely talented middle infielder. She has a left handed bat and brings both speed and power to the plate. She is also an incredible infielder with such a strong arm and the ability to throw from multiple arm slots."
Haley Ellefson (Mayo, Fla.)
JUCO: Florida Southwestern State
Position: Utility
As a freshman at Florida Southwestern State, Ellefson saw action in 53 games, including 24 as a pitcher. At the plate, she recorded 102 at-bats, garnering 41 hits, 39 RBIs and 21 runs, good for a .402 batting average. As a pitcher, Ellefson boasted an impressive 14-0 record which ranks first in FSW career-winning percentage. The Florida native stands at third all-time in FSW history with a 1.39 ERA and sixth in strikeouts with 42. She received First-Team All-Suncoast Conference and FCSAA Region 8 2nd Team All-State honors.
Originally from Mayo, Fla., she played softball at Lafayette High School where she was named Athlete of the Year, as well as Pitcher of the Year honors in her high school career.
Montgomery's Take: "Haley is a lefty pitcher that will add depth, diversity, and experience to a young pitching staff. Haley also has incredible power in a left handed bat. She should be able to contribute on both sides of the ball. Haley also has the ability to play first or outfield which continues to improve our ability to play matchups on both offense and defense."
"We are so excited to continue to add to what is an already great class. Haley and Ruby are tremendous players with great character. Both of their Junior College coaches speak so highly of them and who they are as people not just ballplayers," Montgomery stated. "These two, along with a talented group of freshman will allow us to continue to grow and elevate Maryland Softball towards our goal of a BIG 10 Championship."
