COLLEGE PARK, Md. -Â Â The No. 15 Maryland men's basketball team resumes Big Ten Conference play Saturday, Jan. 4, when it hosts Indiana for a noon tip in College Park. The Terps have finished top-5 in the Big Ten in four of five seasons since joining the league.
STORYLINES
• The Terps checked in at No. 18 in the latest edition of the NET rankings, and have played the 4th-toughest strength of schedule to this point. The Big Ten Conference has 11 teams in the NET top-50 - the most of any conference in the country. The other power-6 conferences have the following number of top-50 teams in the NET: Big East (6), Big 12 (6), Pac-12 (5), ACC (5), SEC (5).
• Maryland has defeated Indiana in all three meetings at XFINITY Center since the Terps joined the league in 2014-15. Maryland won last year's lone meeting, 78-75, as it stormed back from a 14-point first half deficit on 25 points from
Bruno Fernando and 24 points from
Anthony Cowan Jr. The Terps memorably defeated Indiana, 64-52, to claim the 2002 NCAA Championship.
• All-American candidate
Anthony Cowan Jr., has scored at least 16 points in eight of his last nine games, and 20 points in four of those games, after pouring in 19 against Bryant. Cowan leads the Big Ten with 64 free throws made this season.
• Sophomore
Jalen Smith leads the Big Ten and ranks sixth nationally with eight doubles-doubles through 13 games, after recording 11 points and 10 rebounds vs. Bryant. Additionally, Smith has recorded at least two blocks in 11 of 13 games.
• The Terps lead the Big Ten and rank 3rd nationally in rebounds/g (43.1) after out-rebounding Bryant, 48-16. It was the fewest rebounds for an opponent since holding Northwestern to 15 on Nov. 27, 2012. Sophomore
Jalen Smith ranks second in the Big Ten with 10.1 rebounds/g.
• Senior
Anthony Cowan Jr. moved into 15th all-time in scoring (1,592) and is looking to become the 15th player in Maryland history to reach 1,600 points. The Bowie, Md., native is 7th all-time in assists (491). He also passed the legendary Len Bias for third in Maryland history with 471 free throws made against Bryant. Cowan is one of three players in program history with 1,500 points and 450 assists (Greivis Vasquez, John Lucas).
