Maryland Falls to Rhode Island, 11-8

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Rhode Island scored four runs over the final three innings to defeat the Maryland baseball team, 11-8, at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Rams win evened the three game series with the victory.

What to Know
  • The Terrapins (4-1) dropped their first game of the season in a back-and-forth afternoon in College Park. The game featured six lead changes, with the Rams ultimately getting the best of the Terps in the final innings.
  • Rhode Island took the lead in the first on a solo home run before Maryland tied the game in the bottom half. Junior Chris Alleyne singled to open the contest before stealing second. He scored on a Maxwell Costes single to make the score 1-1.
  • Sophomore Benjamin Cowles gave the Terps the lead with a solo home run in the second, his first and the team's first home run of the season. The Rams responded with five runs off freshman RHP Nick Dean in the third to take a 6-2 lead.
  • The Terps fought back to take the lead in the middle innings. In the fourth, a Matt Orlando RBI groundout and Austin Chavis RBI single cut the deficit to 6-4. In the fifth, Tavan Shahidi's first career hit was an RBI double that made it 6-5. Freshman Troy Schreffler followed with a two-run homer, his first as a Terp, to make it 7-6 Maryland.
  • Rhode Island plated a run in the top of the sixth to tie the score before Chavis gave the Terps the lead again with a solo home run in the bottom half. It was Chavis' first career home run as a Terp.
  • The Rams scored two runs off Sean Heine in the seventh, aided by an error from Schreffler in left field that allowed two runs to score with two outs. Rhode Island then added two runs in the top of the ninth to extend the lead and help seal their second victory of the season.
  • Shahidi and Orlando made their first career starts. Wilden made his first appearance of the season.
