COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 9 Maryland men's basketball team looks to clinch the Big Ten Championship Tuesday evening as it travels to Piscataway for 7 pm tip against Rutgers on Big Ten Network.
STORYLINES
• With a win, the Terps would claim their first Big Ten Championship and first conference title since winning the ACC regular season in 2009-10. Overall, it would be Maryland's seventh conference regular season championship. Maryland's last outright title was in 2001-02.
• The Terps have won all eight meetings against Rutgers by an average margin of 12.9 points since both schools joined the Big Ten prior to the 2014-15 season. Jalen Smith led the way with 14 points and 15 rebounds in Maryland's 56-51 defeat of Rutgers on Feb. 4.
• All-American candidate Anthony Cowan Jr. recorded his 500th rebound versus Michigan State to become just the second player in Big Ten history (Talor Battle) to record 1800 pts, 500 rebs, 500 asts.
• Maryland rallied for a dramatic 74-73 victory Wednesday at Minnesota, as Darryl Morsell completed a game-ending 10-1 run with a game-winning 3-pointer with one second remaining. Maryland is just the second team in the last 20 years to overcome a halftime deficit of 14+ points three times in one season, and has won four Big Ten games when trailing with 5:00 to play.
• All-American candidate Jalen Smith has recorded a double-double in 11 of his last 12 games. His 19 double-doubles rank fourth nationally and is tied for the 5th-most in program season history. Over his last 12 games, Smith is averaging 17.8 points (56% FG), 12.1 rebounds and 2.5 blocks.
• Through March 1 games, the Terps are No. 15 in the NET rankings. Maryland is 13-6 against quad 1&2 opponents. The Terps' six losses have all come against teams currently ranked in the AP Top-25, while also owning wins against three of them (Michigan State, Iowa, Ohio State).
• Maryland head coach Mark Turgeon boasts a 73-37 (.658) career record in Big Ten games. The win percentage ranks fourth among coaches with 50 wins over the last 40 years, trailing only Bo Ryan (.717), Bob Knight (.700) and Tom Izzo (.692).
• Anthony Cowan Jr. officially became the Terps' "Ironman" in Thursday's game at Minnesota, as he made his program-record 127th consecutive start. Cowan ranks second in Maryland history having played 33.8 minutes/g for his career and is second all-time in free throws made (569).
