Jared Bernhardt: Big Ten Medal of Honor
Kaila Charles: Big Ten Medal of Honor
Jared Bernhardt (Men's Lacrosse) and Kaila Charles (Women's Basketball) were named the University of Maryland's 2020 Big Ten Medal of Honor award winners, Maryland Athletics announced this week.

The Big Ten Medal of Honor is the conference's most exclusive award and was the first of its kind in intercollegiate athletics to recognize academic and athletic excellence. The Big Ten Medal of Honor was first awarded in 1915 to one student-athlete from the graduating class of each university who had "attained the greatest proficiency in athletics and scholastic work." Big Ten schools currently feature almost 10,000 student-athletes, but only 28 earn this prestigious award on an annual basis. In the 100 years of the Medal of Honor, almost 1,400 student-athletes have earned the distinction.

Bernhardt has established himself as one of Maryland's most decorated players in program history, helping lead Maryland to 47 wins, three Big Ten titles, two Final Fours and the 2017 NCAA Championship. A four-year letter winner and two-year team captain, Bernhardt has started every game in his career while being named a four-time Inside Lacrosse All-American, a three-time USILA All-American, a two-time All-Big Ten honoree and a 2019 Tewaaraton Award Finalist.

The Longwood, Fla. native's legacy will remain cemented in the Maryland record books, with Bernhardt ranking in the top ten in career goals (131), career points (191) and career extra-man goals (15) while holding the No. 2 spot all-time in single season goals (51) and No. 6 spot in single season points (78) after a memorable 2019 campaign.

Bernhardt has enriched the historic legacy of the No. 1 jersey for Maryland lacrosse, wearing the number the past two seasons. The number is bestowed to the player on the team who displays the utmost character and leadership on and off the field and truly lives the program's motto "Be The Best" in his everyday life.

The criminology and criminal justice major has been a model student-athlete off the field as well, as he was named a 2020 Senior Class Award candidate and two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.

In her senior season, Charles earned WBCA NCAA Division I Coaches' All-America Honorable Mention honors and All-America honors from the Associated Press and the USBWA. She garnered unanimous All-Big Ten First Team honors for the second straight year as well.

This year, Charles led the Terrapins with 14.3 points and 7.3 rebounds as they earned a record of 28-4 and won 17 straight games to end the season. Charles helped lead the Terps to their fifth Big Ten championship in six years and their fourth Big Ten Tournament title.

Charles finished her career with 1,984 points, which is No. 6 on Maryland's all-time list. She grabbed 930 career rebounds, which was also in the top 10 of the Terrapin record books. She started in every game of her career and tied Alyssa Thomas' school record with 135 career starts.

Charles earned All-Big Ten Academic honors three times and was named a Senior CLASS Award finalist.

Seniors Darby Moore of women's soccer and Johannes Bergmann from men's soccer earned Maryland's two Big Ten Postgraduate Scholarships. Two students competing in intercollegiate athletics from each of the 14 Big Ten institutions who plan to continue their education at a graduate degree program were each awarded a $7,500 scholarship, based on primarily academic achievements.

A five-year member of the women's soccer program, Moore helped lead Maryland to its first-ever Big Ten Tournament appearance in her redshirt senior season this past fall. She is set to graduate later this month with a dual degree in Kinesiology and Physiology & Neurobiology while being named to the Dean's List every semester of enrollment. The Norfolk, Va. native is a four-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree, a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and the founder and president of the Maryland Athletics Pre-Health organization.
Moore has completed clinical experience with Sentara Princess Anne Hospital, Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and the University of Maryland Rehabilitation and Orthopedic Institute and will enroll in the University of Maryland Medical School next fall. In his senior season, Bergmann emerged as one of the top center backs in the nation, earning first-team All-Big Ten honors and United Soccer Coaches All-North Region First Team honors. He scored two goals and added two assists in his senior campaign and helped the Terps record 33 clean sheets during his career.
