Terps Mourn Passing of Hall of Famer Royal

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Maryland Athletics mourns the passing of former men's soccer and men's tennis head coach Doyle Royal, who passed away Monday at the age of 101.

Royal, a 1943 graduate of Maryland, had a distinguished career as a student-athlete and coach at the University. As a student-athlete, Royal was the top singles player and team captain of the Terps' tennis team while also competing for the soccer team.

After graduation, Royal served in World War II as a Second Lieutenant in the Army's 90th Infantry Division. He returned to Maryland and began his career as a coach in 1946, becoming the first head coach of the men's soccer program. Royal would lead the Terps to a 217-58-18 record and 20 conference titles from 1946-1973. His crowning achievement came in 1968, when he guided the Terps to their first National Championship.

Royal became the head tennis coach in 1954 and led the Terps to two ACC Championships and a 296-114-1 record over his 27-year tenure.

A Washington D.C., native, Royal was inducted into the Maryland Athletics Hall of Fame in 1988. An accomplished tennis player throughout his life, Royal continued to play competitively into his 80s and won multiple USTA events.

In 2018, current men's soccer coach Sasho Cirovski presented Royal with a 1968 National Championship ring, an honor the team was not given when they initially captured the championship. The 1968 team had been previously assembled a few months prior at a reunion in College Park, hosted by Cirovski and the current team, that Royal was unable to attend.
