Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

No. 3 Terps Cruise To 108-66 Victory

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- The No. 3 Maryland women's basketball team secured another dominant victory to open its season, defeating UNC Wilmington, 108-66, Thursday night at the XFINITY Center. The Terps (5-0) had five players in double figures and scored 30 points off of 21 forced turnovers.

Angel Reese continued her dominant start to the season with a team-high 23 points, 12 rebounds, five steals and two blocks. The 23-point, 12-rebound game marks Reese's third-straight double-double and fourth of the season.

Katie Benzan scored a season-high 22 points on 6-10 shooting from three-point range.

Mimi Collins (21 points), Ashley Owusu (16 points) and Shyanne Sellers (13 points) combined for 50 points.

The Terps dominated on the glass with a 43-27 rebounding advantage.

Cierra Gross led the Seahawks with 17 points.

Coach Frese's Take

"I thought our effort was there tonight. I liked that we competed hard for 40 minutes. I love the stat about 24 assists and three turnovers. We were able to show just how many weapons we have and how versatile we are. Some things defensively I think we still need to continue to improve on, but I thought for the most part the effort was there. We just have to continue to keep getting better every single time we step on the floor."

Breaking Down The Action
  • Maryland got off to an uncharacteristically slow start, scoring just one point in the opening two minutes and trailing 4-1. The Terps used a 20-6 run to end the first quarter to finish with a  21-10 lead.
  • The Terps dominated the second quarter and grew their lead to 50-22 after an eight-point, four-rebound quarter from Reese.
  • The teams began trading baskets in the third quarter, but the size of Maryland's frontcourt increasingly became too much to handle for the smaller Seahawks as the Terps led 80-45 after three.
  • Benzan poured in 13 points with three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter alone as the Terps ran away from the Seahawks.
Reese's Rare Air
  • Reese posted her third double-double in a row with 23 points and 12 rebounds.
  • She became the first Terp with double-doubles in three consecutive games since Brionna Jones had four in a row to end her Maryland career (2016-17). Jones had four in a row spanning the Big Ten Championship Game through three NCAA Tournament games (March 5-25, 2017).
  • Reese became the first Terp with three consecutive games with 10-plus rebounds since Brionna's sister Stephanie Jones had three games in a row with double-figure rebounds in the final three games of the 2019-20 COVID-shorted season. She had 10-plus boards  in each of the Big Ten Tournament games (March 6-8, 2020).
Double-Figure Games
  • Reese was in double-figures for the fourth time this season and the 12 time in her career.
  • Collins scored in double-figures for the 26th time ever and fourth this year.
  • Benzan hit double-figures for the 86th time in her career and fourth this year.
  • Owusu had her 47th career game (fifth this season) in double-figures.
  • Sellers hit double-figures for the fourth time in as many games in her career.
Century Mark
  • The Terps scored more than 100 points for the first time this season.
  • It was the 76th time in program history Maryland scored 100 or more points. The team scored 100 or more points, a school-record tying seven times last season (also in 2016-17).
Diamond Debut
  • Junior Diamond Miller made her season debut against the Seahawks at the 7:08 mark of the first quarter. She finished with one rebound and one assist in four minutes.
Series History
  • Maryland is 2-0 vs. UNC Wilmington.
  • In their last meeting, Maryland won 67-61 at the XFINITY Center on Dec. 29, 2009.
