UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- The No. 7 ranked Maryland women's lacrosse team dropped a back-and-forth season opener to No. 21 Penn State, 15-13, on Sunday afternoon.

In her first game back after missing 2020 due to a torn ACL,
Lizzie Colson tallied four caused turnovers to lead the defense. Maryland was down 8-4 at halftime and battled back in the second half, tying the game at nine and then trading goals with the Nittany Lions until Penn State scored the final two after the game was tied 13-13 with four minutes left. Victoria Hensh scored her first career goal to tie the game at 12 and Leubecker evened the score at 13.
This marks Maryland's first ever Big Ten loss since the Terps joined the conference in 2015, now standing at 28-1 all-time. It is Maryland's first season opening loss since 2006.
The Terps will be back in action next weekend against No. 9 Michigan for two games at the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex, on Friday, February 26 at 4:00 p.m. and Sunday, February 28 at noon.
