COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Senior
Grace Griffin starred on both ends of the field, leading Maryland with four goals and picking up a career-high five groundballs as the No. 10 Terps beat No. 17 Michigan for the second time in three days, 12-9.
"It obviously wasn't pretty today with the tough conditions but I'm really proud of my team for pulling out the win against a really strong Michigan team," said head coach
Cathy Reese. "Too many turnovers for our liking but we took some really good shots and made some key stops. We have a really young group and faced with the challenge of playing two games in three days, they found a way to get it done. So I'm really proud of that."
The Terps were led offensively by Griffin and sophomore
Hannah Leubecker, who tallied a hat trick to give herself 10 goals on the weekend. Senior
Hannah Warther also had three goals.
Maryland held Michigan to just 13-of-19 on clears and caused 13 turnovers, including three on clears by sophomore attacker
Libby May. Redshirt senior
Lizzie Colson also caused three on the defensive end.
Michigan led early, holding Maryland to only one goal and scoring four over the first 18 minutes of the game. Griffin led Maryland back, scoring two in a row herself within a minute of each other. After trailing 5-4, Maryland scored the last four goals of the half, which included two by Warther.
The Wolverines cut Maryland's lead to one in the second half at 9-8, but the Terps responded immediately with three goals over three minutes to retake a 12-8 lead. After Michigan scored at 12:35, the Terps held Michigan scoreless for the rest of the game.
Maryland is now 2-1 on the season after the weekend sweep of Michigan and moves to 7-0 all-time against the Wolverines. The Terps will now have 10 days until their next game when they travel up to Baltimore to face Johns Hopkins on Wednesday, March 10.
