UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – After a tough outing earlier in the weekend, the Maryland field hockey squad (3-3) bounced back with a 3-2 win at Penn State (2-3) Sunday afternoon.
Bibi Donraadt scored twice in the match as Maryland took an early two-goal lead. She tapped in the game-winner with under 2:00 to play.
"This is a young group and they're a work in progress," head coach
Missy Meharg said. "We spent about two and a half hours yesterday just letting them speak, letting them watch the footage. It's about doing the little things really well. We talked about being urgent and we talked about being very simple and giving that energy to each other. Couldn't be more proud of the team.
Noelle Frost had a stellar day once again."
Â
Donraadt opened the scoring just 3:37 into the match when she finished off a pass sent in from
Maura Verleg at the top of the circle.
Â
Just over two minutes later,
Emma DeBerdine made it a 2-0 lead for Maryland when she buried a shot off the rebound from the right side of the cage.
Â
Penn State scored twice in the second quarter to tie the match at 2. In the 21
st minute, Anna Simon scored off a penalty corner. Six minutes later, Bree Bednarski scored the equalizer with just under 3:00 left in the quarter.
Â
The teams stayed tied through the third quarter, with Penn State getting off six shots in the period. Senior goalkeeper
Noelle Frost held the Nittany Lions off, notching three of her season-high nine saves in the third quarter.
Â
Donraadt tapped in the go-ahead goal with 1:55 to play off a pass from
Emma DeBerdine on the right side.
Â
Maryland took 10 shots to Penn State's 19 and had one penalty corner to the Nittany Lions' eight.
Â
Next, Maryland will host Indiana (0-6) for two games Friday and Saturday at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Game times and live streaming information will be available this week.
