Terps Fall In Series Opener To Iowa

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Maryland baseball team fell to Iowa, 6-4, in the first game of a four-game weekend series with Iowa and Ohio State on Saturday evening at Bill Davis Stadium.

What You Should Know
  • Maryland falls to 5-7 on the season, while Iowa improves to 6-8.
  • Redshirt sophomore right-hander Sean Burke and Iowa starter Drew Irvine were locked into an old-school pitcher's duel until the mid-late innings of Maryland's weekend opener.
  • Burke delivered one of his best starts of the season, going six innings, allowing a pair of runs (just one earned) on five hits, while striking out 11 and issuing zero walks.
  • Iowa broke open the scoring in the fourth with a leadoff home run off Burke. The Sutton, Mass. native would then retired the next three batters he faced to limit the damage and keep it a one-run ballgame.
  • Iowa plated an unearned run in the sixth after an Iowa strikeout victim safely reached first on a passed ball, taking a 2-0 lead.
  • Maryland tied it up in the bottom half of the sixth after Benjamin Cowles was able to drop a looper into no man's land, scoring Randy Bednar and Maxwell Costes.
  • The Terps took their first lead of the game in the seventh as sophomore Matt Orlando hit his second career home run, a solo shot deep down the left field line at Bill Davis Stadium.
  • Iowa responded with a two-out, two-run homer of their own to take the lead in the top half of the eighth off reliever Sam Bello.
  • Bednar answered with a solo blast to straightaway center field, tying up the game at 4-4 heading into the ninth.
  • The Hawkeyes took a two-run lead after blasting another two-out, two-run bomb in the top half of the ninth, this time off reliever Ryan Ramsey.
  • Maryland had two runners on in the bottom of the ninth but were unable to score any as Maryland would go on to lose the series opener.
Up Next
