COLUMBUS, Ohio – The University of Maryland baseball team dropped both games of its doubleheader Sunday, falling to Iowa 11-2 in the first game, while falling to Ohio State 5-4 in game two.
What You Should Know (G1)
- Iowa struck first in game one, belting a solo homer off starter Connor Staine to set the tone.
- Maryland found the scoreboard in the top of the second, as Matt Orlando singled up the middle to bring home Bobby Zmarzlak and tie the game.
- Iowa answered right away with an RBI single in the bottom of the second, taking a 2-1 lead which they would never relinquish. They Hawkeyes scored eight more runs in the bottom of the sixth.
- Benjamin Cowles hit a solo home run in the seventh, his team-leading eighth of the season.
- Staine went five and a third, allowing six runs on six hits. Tyler Blohm, Sean Heine, and Zach Thompson all made appearances in relief.
What You Should Know (G2)
- Chris Alleyne led off the second leg of the twin bill with a leadoff home run.
- Nick Dean, who started in an "opener" role for Maryland, cruised through three scoreless innings in his first start of the season. He surrendered a leadoff homer in the fourth, which tied the game and ended his day.
- The Buckeyes plated a pair of runs in the fifth on a sacrifice fly and a RBI double off reliever Sean Fisher to take the 3-1 lead.
- Maryland responded right away, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game again after Logan Ott blasted a ball that was mishandled by the Ohio State first baseman that allowed a run to score, then Cowles laid down a squeeze bunt to plate Shliger.
- Ohio State re-took the lead in the seventh as David Falco allowed a pair of inherited runs to score.
- The Terps' comeback bid in the eighth was limited to just a single run, courtesy of a Cowles RBI single. Maryland however left the bases loaded and continued to trail by one.
- Buckeyes' closer TJ Brock finished the job, clinching the victory and earning the save.
