Terrapins Drop Tight Match to #5 Michigan, 2-1

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The 11th-ranked Maryland field hockey team dropped a tight match to No. 5 Michigan, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex.

Maryland (6-5, 4-3 B1G) took 11 shots to Michigan's eight and both teams took two penalty corners.

"What a game, always a great matchup with great athletes," head coach Missy Meharg said. "Obviously, we're disappointed in the outcome of the match, but the product couldn't have been more resilient, more committed. The team followed the gameplan to a T and got a beautiful goal off a fall-away press."

The teams stayed scoreless through the first quarter. The Wolverines (8-2, 6-0) got on the board first when Sarah Pyrtek scored off a pass from Kathryn Peterson with 10:08 left in the first quarter. Michigan held a 1-0 lead at half.

Maryland tied the match just under 5:00 into the third quarter when Mayv Clune picked up the ball near the 25 yard line, carried it into the left side of the circle and passed it in front of the cage from the baseline to Taylor Mason for the score.

The Wolverines took the lead for good when Lora Clarke scored from the far post off a pass in from Maya Gompper with 16 seconds left in the third quarter.

Maryland pulled goalkeeper Noelle Frost from the cage with 3:28 to play in favor of an extra field player. The Terrapins earned a penalty corner with 42 seconds to play, but the first shot by Maura Verleg was blocked and the second by Anna Castaldo was wide.

Frost made four saves on the day.

Freshman defender Rayne Wright was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week Monday for her first career weekly honor.

Next, the Terps and the Wolverines will play Sunday at noon at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Sunday's game will be streamed on BTN Plus.
