Maryland Drops Sunday Rubber Game To Nebraska

LINCOLN, Neb. -- The University of Maryland baseball team fell to Nebraska, 14-3, as the Huskers took the series in the rubber game on Sunday afternoon at Haymarket Park.

What You Should Know
  • The first-place Nebraska Cornhuskers opened the scoring with a five-run second inning. The Huskers chased Maryland starter Jason Savacool, who allowed six consecutive base hits and five runs in the second.
  • Maryland got its first hit - and run - of the game in the third with a Chris Alleyne solo home run down the right field line.
  • The Huskers put up a pair of runs in the fourth to extend their lead to six.
  • Fifth-year senior Elliot Zoellner gave Maryland two strong innings of relief in the middle innings, allowing just a single hit and no runs in his two innings of work.
  • Maryland scored two runs in the top of the seventh on a bases-loaded HBP drawn by Benjamin Cowles and a RBI fielder's choice hit by Tucker Flint. The Terps closed the inning by stranding the bases-loaded with the potential game-tying run at the plate.
  • Nebraska scored seven in the eighth as Maryland skipper Rob Vaughn handed the ball off to Gavin Stellpflug, Sean Fisher, and Zach Thompson on the mound in the inning that put things out of reach for the Terps.
Up Next
  • Maryland hosts Ohio State for a three-game series at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium next weekend from April 16-18. The Buckeyes currently stand 13-9 and fourth place in the conference. All three games will be streamed live on Big Ten Network Plus and broadcast on the Maryland Baseball Network.
