COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The 12
th-ranked Maryland field hockey squad held off a late push by No. 6 Rutgers to win 2-1 Sunday and sweep the weekend series to close the regular season.
Â
Sophomore
Bibi Donraadt scored the game-winning goal for Maryland (8-6, 5-3 B1G) with 3:22 to play when she tipped a pass from
Kyler Greenwalt over the goal line. The Terrapins notched five saves in the final period to help seal the win.
Â
"Not a better way to finish the regular season with back-to-back wins at home against a top six team, a very, very good team," head coach
Missy Meharg said. "I couldn't be more proud of the women for coming back. You go ahead once and you go ahead again. I speak for the whole staff and the whole program, it's been quite a season. To play six games at home and be in a position to beat a top team at the end, the sky is the limit. We are in a great spot to go into the Big Ten Tournament."
Â
Maryland struck first seven minutes in when redshirt junior
Mayv Clune deflected in a shot from freshman
Anna Castaldo from the right side of the cage.
Â
The Terrapins held their 1-0 lead through the third quarter.
Â
Rutgers tied the game on a penalty stroke by Milena Redlingshoefer with 7:47 to play.
Â
The Scarlet Knights had four penalty corners in the first seven minutes of the fourth quarter. Frost made three saves to hold them off.
Â
Rutgers (9-5, 5-3) got a shot off with 1:40 to play, but sophomore
Belle Bressler was there to make a defensive save.
Â
The Terps took seven shots to Rutgers' 12. Frost finished with six saves.
Â
The Terrapins are the No. 4 seed in the Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament this week in Iowa City, Iowa. Maryland will take on fifth-seeded Iowa Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. ET in the Quarterfinals at the Hawkeyes' Grant Field. All eight games of the Big Ten Tournament will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
