COLLEGE PARK, Md. -Â The No. 13 Maryland women's lacrosse team will play in its fifth-straight Big Ten Tournament Championship as the Terps take on No. 2 Northwestern on Sunday, May 2 at noon. The game will air on the Big Ten Network with Mark Dixon and Rachael DeCecco on the call.
NORTHWESTERN STORYLINES
LOCKDOWN LIZZIE
- The leader of this year's Maryland team and a First Team All-Big Ten selection, defender Lizzie Colson has had a sensational year for the Terps, solidifying her place as one of the top defenders in the country.
- Colson is the nation's leader in caused turnovers with 40Â and has 11Â more caused turnovers than anyone else in the Big Ten.
- An Inside Lacrosse First Team Midseason All-American and Tewaaraton Nominee, Colson also leads the Big Ten with 49Â groundballs, nine more than anyone else in the league.
- 7A three-time Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, IWLCA National Defensive Player of the Week (3/23) and Inside Lacrosse National Player if the Week (3/25), Colson is also third in program lore with 303 draw controls. Colson has at least four groundballs in nine-of-14 games this season and at least three caused turnovers in eight-of-14 games.
HISTORIC HANNAH
- Yesterday named a First Team All-Big Ten honoree, attacker Hannah Leubecker has starred for Maryland offensively this season, leading the Terps with 51Â goals, averaging 3.64 per game, the third-most in the Big Ten and 15th-highest mark in the country.
- Leubecker set the program record for the most goals through the first eight games of the season with 35 and was tied with all-time leading scorer Megan Whittle for the most goals through the first 10 games of the season with 38.
- The sophomore has at least two goals in 11-of-14Â games this season and at least a hat-trick in eight-of-14Â games, with two seven goal games and last night a six goal game.
- Leubecker was named the Inside Lacrosse National Player of the Week on March 4.
TOURNEY TIME
- The Terps have dominated the Big Ten since entering the conference in 2015, standing at 47-7 overall. Maryland won three-straight Big Ten Tournament Championships in 2016-18 and has a 9-2 record overall in five appearances in the tournament, with five-straight Championship game appearances.
- Overall, including the regular season, Maryland has won eight of the 11 Big Ten Championships (five regular season, three tournament).
- Maryland has won 14 Conference Tournament Championships in program history, with nine of those coming since Cathy Reese became the head coach in 2007 (six ACC, three Big Ten).
- The Terps took home six-straight ACC titles from 2009-14 and three-straight B1G titles from 2016-18. Reese is 24-4 as the coach of Maryland in conference tournament games.Â
SERIES HISTORY
- Maryland leads the all-time series with Northwestern, 17-9.
- The Wildcats, who are undefeated this season at 12-0, beat the Terps in their two meetings earlier this season, 25-12 and 20-10.
- Maryland and Northwestern have met 10 times in the postseason, with Maryland accumulating a 7-3 record in those meetings.
- The Terps and Wildcats have played in three Big Ten Championship games, with Maryland defeating Northwestern in 2016 & 2017 and Northwestern defeating Maryland in 2019.
- Maryland also defeated Northwestern in the 2010 National Championship, 13-11, to win their first title under head coach Cathy Reese.Â
