Staff Writer - Strategic Communications/Media Relations

The University of Maryland is seeking qualified applications for the position of Staff Writer. The position will work as a member of the Strategic Communications/Media Relations unit, reporting to the Director of Website Management. The Staff Writer will tell the stories of the department's student-athletes, coaches, staff and teams. 

Responsibilities: Staff writer will be responsible for writing feature stories and human-interest pieces for umterps.com and One Maryland Magazine, as well as writing recaps for various sports including, but not limited to, football, men's basketball, women's basketball. They will post stories on umterps.com, the One Maryland App and social media. The position will also possibly serve as the media relations contact for one sport (to be determined). 

The candidate must have strong knowledge of social media and digital platforms as well as outstanding writing and strategic communications skills. Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends and available to travel.  

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree required in journalism, communications or related field. Preferred experience as a staff/beat writer for two years in college or professional athletics. 

Compensation: This is a 12-month position that begins in July 2021, paid at an hourly rate of $11.75 with the potential to earn overtime pay. The hourly rate will increase to $12.50 on January 1, 2022. Position runs through June 30, 2022. This position does not include benefits.
