Box Score COLLEGE PARK, MD – Second half goals from
Joshua Bolma and
Justin Harris buoyed No. 8 Maryland (5-1) past the Michigan Wolverines under the lights at Ludwig Field by a score of 2-1.
Malcolm Johnston took a wonderful pass from Bolma and very nearly gave the Terps a 1-0 just minutes into the game. The Wolverines began to control the time of possession but kept getting shut down by
Brett St. Martin and the Terps defense. Maryland found their footing and provided a counter as
Jacen Russell-Rowe and
Nick Richardson both provided pressure on the Wolverine defense. Both team's entered the second half scoreless but fireworks would soon follow.
After a Michigan foul in the 55th minute, Bolma stepped up and fired the free kick around the wall of Wolverines defenders and past the Michigan goalie to break the scoreless tie. Maryland continued to buzz around the net and a Johnston pass to Harris gave the Terps another golden opportunity. Harris used the open space to set his feet and put a shot from distance behind the Wolverines goalie for a commanding 2-0 lead. Michigan would not go away though as they cut the Maryland lead in half with a goal in 73rd minute. The Terps defense and goalie
Niklas Neumann held strong and suffocated the Wolverines attack as Maryland was able to come away with the victory.
Bolma Strikes Again
- Joshua Bolma scored his second career goal for Maryland as his free kick in the 55th minute sent The Crew and Ludwig Field faithful into a frenzy.
- Both of Bolma's goals on the season have been of the difficult variety as the redshirt Freshman has come on strong heading into conference play.
Harris Gets On The Board
- Justin Harris has been a key contributor for the Terps the past two seasons but tonight's 22 minutes were a season high for the Clarksville, Maryland native.
- Ben Bender's pass to Johnston then in turn set up Harris with little defense around him, making the eventual game-winning goal easier to take.
Strong Defense
- Johnston, St. Martin and Chris Rindov paced the Maryland defense with all of them playing all 90 minutes.
- Alex Nitzl and William Kulvik also played a pivotal role on the Terps backend as they accounted for 66 and 73 minutes respectively.
Up Next
- The Terps will stay home and welcome the High Point Prowlers to Ludwig Field on Monday night.
- Monday's matchup will mark the first-ever contest between Maryland and High Point.
