COLLEGE PARK, MD – Ohio State scored a goal late in regulation to down Maryland, 2-1 in the Big Ten opener for both teams.
Maryland (4-2-3, 0-1-0 Big Ten) only had just one significant opportunity in the first 63 minutes of the game but they made it count. In the 63rd minute,
Mikayla Dayes sprinted down the right sideline and only had
Kori Locksley breaking towards the net. The senior forward put the ball exactly where it needed to be as it found Locksley's foot who then fired it off of the Buckeyes goalie and into the back of the net, tying the game at one. The Terps continued to pressure the Ohio State defense with Dayes nearly scoring in the 18th minute but her shot sailed off to the right.
The momentum for most of the second half remained with Maryland as the team kept the ball in the Buckeyes zone, now looking for the game winner. Ohio State did get counter with a chance late in regulation but
Madeline Smith's diving stop kept the game scoreless.
The Buckeyes (6-3-0, 1-0-0) got the final chance of regulation as they were finally able to crack Smith and the Terps defense.
The first half saw goalie
Liz Brucia under siege as she saw ten shots and was forced to make four difficult saves. The Buckeyes managed to convert one late in the 42nd minute as the Maryland defense couldn't clear the ball away and Brucia couldn't get her to kick her right foot out in time to stop the oncoming shot. The second half was much of the same as Ohio State kept playing an up tempo style in the first half that Maryland had trouble keeping up with.
Strong Second Half
- The Terps came out in the second half with an answer to Ohio State as they were able to match the speed and tempo that the Buckeyes brought to the game.
- The combo of Dayes and Locksley gave Maryland the equalizer and the team didn't stop after that, now trying to find the lead.
- Goalie Madeline Smith once again took over for Liz Brucia at halftime and made four saves.
