No. 11 Michigan Tops No. 8 Maryland, 69-49

COLLEGE PARK, MDNo. 8 Maryland saw its 31-game homecourt win streak come to an end as No. 11 Michigan handed the Terrapins a 69-49 defeat on Sunday at XFINITY Center.

On an emotional day, Maryland's Brenda Frese coached the Terps following the passing of her father Bill Frese on Sunday morning.

Chloe Bibby and Angel Reese were Maryland's leading scorers with nine points apiece. Reese also had a game-high 10 rebounds. Mimi Collins and Diamond Miller each scored eight points.

The Terps (12-5, 4-2 Big Ten) also saw their 28-game home win streak against Big Ten opponents come to an end as Michigan (15-2, 6-1) became the first conference team to win inside XFINITY Center since Rutgers beat Maryland, 73-65 on Dec. 31, 2018.

Michigan had remarkable shooting in the first and third quarters. The Wolverines opened the game by hitting its first seven shot attempts and made 5-of-7 from three-point range in building a 26-16 lead after the first quarter.

Up 34-19 at halftime, Michigan opened the second half knocking down its first five shots to lead the Terps, 46-23, midway through the third quarter. The Wolverines led 54-30 after the third.

Michigan shot 48.2 percent from the floor in the game, making 10-of-20 three-pointers.  Maddie Nolan led Michigan with 21 points, making 7-of-11 on threes.

Maryland held Michigan's leading scorer Naz Hillmon (20.1 ppg entering the game) to just nine points.

Brenda Frese's Take
"I mean, you know, this was a tough one credit to Michigan I thought they, you know, looked hungrier, faster, obviously the more aggressive team for 40 minutes. It helps, I think, when you start the first quarter and they were lights out hitting their first nine shots, five early threes. That kind of set us kind of spiraling, but credit to them. I mean, our game plan early obviously was to limit Naz, which, you know, we did a tremendous job on her. But, you know, they're a great team, they recently went to a sweet 16 and have a lot of talented players.  Second quarter, you know, I thought we settled in our defense got better, but,  then we weren't as patient on the offensive end. Clearly, you know, the last two games we felt like we're getting in some kind of rhythm, but still have a lot a lot of growing to be able to do as a team. So, still searching for identity or, you know, energy and effort. I mean, the good thing is, is it's only January so, but at some point, we've got to be able to get in a rhythm as a team and be able to come out competing for 40 straight minutes."
