Roman Hemby Named Big Ten Freshman of the Week

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – After rushing for 179 yards and three touchdowns in Maryland's 31-24 Homecoming win over Northwestern this past Saturday, Terrapin running back Roman Hemby has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.

Hemby, who set career-highs in rushing yards, touchdowns and carries (24) against the Wildcats, now has four 100-yard rushing games this season. The freshman scored the game-winning touchdown as he broke off a career-long 75-yard TD run with 3:33 remaining in the game to put the Terps ahead for good.

An Edgewood, Maryland native, Hemby is the first Terp with three rushing touchdowns in a game since 2018 and is the first Maryland player to rush for 179 yards since Jake Funk had 180 against Rutgers in 2020.

Hemby now has seven rushing touchdowns this season, leading all Big Ten freshmen in the category.

This marks the third time this season a Maryland player has garnered Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors. Hemby was also recognized on September 5 and true freshman Jaishawn Barham took home the honor on October 10.

Hemby was also named the Solomon Eye Physicians & Surgeons Terp of the Week.

The Terps (6-2, 3-2 Big Ten) are on their bye week. Maryland returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 5 at Wisconsin.
