COLLEGE PARK, MD - Coming off Monday's 22-point win over Niagara to open the season and the
Kevin Willard era, the Maryland men's basketball team returns to the XFINITY Center on Thursday night (7 PM) to host Western Carolina. The game will be streamed on B1G+ while fans can listen to the Maryland Sports Network (105.7 FM - Baltimore, The TEAM 980 AM - D.C., One Maryland App) with Voice of the Terps Johnny Holliday, Chris Knoche, and Walt Williams calling the action.
Maryland-Western Carolina: The Series
- Maryland holds a 2-0 record all-time against the Catamounts.
- This marks the first meeting between the two teams since 2005 - an 87-55 win for the Terps. Travis Garrison had a career-high 23 points and 14 rebounds in the win, while Ekene Ibekwe scored 12 of his 18 points after halftime. Nik Caner-Medley grabbed 10 rebounds to become the 26th player in Maryland history to reach 1,000 points and 500 rebounds.
- The only other meeting between the two teams was a 113-46 win for Maryland in 1998.
Terps make defense a priority
- Niagara was held to just 40 percent shooting and did not record a three-point basket all night. The Purple Eagles' 49 points were the fewest points Maryland allowed in a season opener since American only managed 56 in the 2016-17 season opener.
- The 49 points allowed marked the 28th time since 2010-11 that Maryland gave up 50-or-fewer points in a game including the 18th time under 50 total points.
- The last time Maryland held a team without a three-pointer came on Nov. 24, 2017 against St. Bonaventure.
- On the opening night of the 2022-23 season, Maryland was the only team in the country to not allow a single made three pointer.
- Defensively, Maryland blocked eight shots, had nine steals, and forced 12 turnovers in the win.
Recapping the Niagara Win
- Maryland opened the Kevin Willard era in style on Monday night in XFINITY Center, cruising to a 71-49 victory over Niagara for its 46th consecutive home opener win.
- The Terps used a 9-0 run in the middle of the second half to go up 48-35 and take control of the game. Donta Scott, Jahmir Young and Don Carey Jr. all hit big shots in the ensuing minutes to put the game completely out of reach, getting the home crowd loud and on its feet.
- Scott led the Terps with 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting (4-of-5 from deep) in a team-high 35 minutes. Young also came up big in all facets with 14 points to go along with a team-high four assists. Young and sophomore Julian Reese each grabbed seven boards.
- Maryland was stingy on defense all night, forcing 12 turnovers and blocking eight shots. Ian Martinez led the effort with five steals in his 16 minutes off the bench.

Seven Terps Make Official Debutes
- Don Carey and Jahmir Young made their first official starts for the Eagles, while Jahari Long, Patrick Emilien, Noah Batchelor, Ike Cornish, and Caelum Swanton-Rodger all earned the first minutes of their careers in the season opener against Niagara.
- Ian Martinez and Jahari Long were the first two players to sub into the Niagara game.
- All 11 players scored at least a point in the game. Outside of the starting five (Cary, Young, Scott, Hakim Hart, Julian Reese), Long (10), Emilien (14), and Martinez (16) each played double-figure minutes.
- Of the Terps' 25 opponents in 2022-23, 14 played in the 2022 NCAA Tournament with Miami and Saint Peter's advancing to the Elite Eight along with Michigan, Providence, Purdue and UCLA playing in the Sweet 16.
- Overall, of the Terps' 31 scheduled regular-season games, 17 will be against teams that played in the 2022 NCAA Tournament.
- The non-conference schedule will also be highlighted by playing in the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off at Mohegan Sun against Saint Louis (Nov. 19, 1 p.m.) and either Miami or Providence (Nov. 20, 1/3:30 p.m.), facing Louisville (Nov. 29) in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, and taking on Tennessee (Dec. 11, 4:30 p.m.) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn as part of the Basketball Hall of Fame Invitational. Maryland will also host future Big Ten foe UCLA (Dec. 14, 9 p.m.) in the XFINITY Center as part of a home-and-home series.
- A total of 10 opponents on Maryland's schedule were ranked in the final USA Today Coaches Top 25 Poll of the 2021-22 season.
- Maryland has 10 opponents on this year's slate who finished in the Top 50 NET rankings last season: Tennessee (7), UCLA (11), Purdue (12), Iowa (14), Illinois (15), Ohio State (23), Wisconsin (25), Michigan (27), Michigan State (38), Indiana (44).
- Five opponents enter the 2022-23 season ranked in the preseason Top 25 - No. 8 UCLA, No. 11 Tennessee, No. 13 Indiana, No. 22 Michigan, and No. 23 Illinois.
