COLLEGE PARK, MD – No. 13 Maryland secured a top-four seed in the Big Ten Tournament, with a 67-64 victory over No. 10 Indiana on Friday night before an enthusiastic crowd of 7,532 at the XFINITY Center on Red Out Night.
The Terps conclude the regular season with a 21-7 overall record and a 13-4 Big Ten record and will be seeded second through fourth in the Big Ten Tournament, which starts next week in Indianapolis.
Angel Reese led Maryland with 20 points and a career-high tying 16 rebounds as she posted her 16th double-double of the season.
Diamond Miller scored 16 points. She also had a clutch block and steal in the final minutes of the game to help preserve the win.
Katie Benzan (10 points) hit a baby jumper in the lane with 11.8 seconds left to seal the win.
With 35 second left, Indiana got within one point at 65-64 on a three-pointer by Nicole Cardano-Hillary, her first points of the game, but Benzan hit that floater for the exclamation point on the victory.
Shyanne Sellers tallied 12 points, handed out three assists and came away with three steals – her seventh time in nine games with three or more steals.
The Terps took control of the game early, leading 16-6 less then eight minutes into the game. Maryland held the lead for the remainder of the game.
The victory over the 10th-ranked Hoosiers provides a measure of revenge as Indiana beat Maryland for the first time ever earlier this season, 70-63 in overtime on Jan. 2. Maryland now has four wins over ranked teams this season with victories over then-No. 6 Baylor, No. 18 Ohio State and No. 22 Iowa. This was
Brenda Frese's 25th win over a Top-10 team in her 20 years of leading the Terrapins.
Indiana (19-7, 11-5) was led by Grace Berger (16 points and 10 rebounds) and Ali Patberg (13 points) as the Hoosiers, who were ranked as high as No. 5 in the country this season, have lost three in a row.
Brenda Frese's Take
"First of all, I can't thank our crowd enough tonight for being our sixth man. We talked about it before the game, what an empty feeling last year was not playing in front of fans and we really wanted to feed off their energy and they brought all of that tonight. I can't say enough for the students that showed up. They really gave us a ton of energy.
"This game is going to be one we'll always remember. A really special one when that really kind of sums up our season. When you talk about the adversity we had to play through in this game, I thought we set the tone early with our defense, with our rebounding and really taking care of the basketball and we had to do all of that. You saw that late, we ended up being one basket better but we had the stops on the defensive end and locked it up with our rebounding. To lock up the double bye is huge, just given the fact that we don't have the depth that we've had in the past, to have that extra day for your legs is going to make a big difference. Again, when you talk about how we're playing, we've won 9 of our last 10, we were 14-1 this year at home. All of our losses this year, 6 out of 7 seven were on the road, and all against top 30 teams. This team is battle-tested. They didn't even flinch when the game was close."
