COLLEGE PARK, MD -- In a battle of undefeated teams in the Big Ten opener for both teams, No. 4 Maryland beat No. 12 Rutgers, 16-6, at the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex on Sunday afternoon. The Terps remain perfect at 7-0 while the Scarlet Knights suffered their first loss and stand at 8-1.
Hannah Leubecker led the way with four
goals and two assists for six points. Freshman
Jordyn Lipkin had her best game of her young career with new highs of three goals and two assists for five points.
Libby May had her third hat trick of the season.
Aurora Cordingley had three goals and two assists for five points. She has at least five points in every game this season.
Between the pipes,
Emily Sterling made 10 saves, allowing just six goals.
Marin Hartshorn and Cassidy Spills each had a hat trick for Rutgers.
Breaking Down The Action
• After Rutgers jumped out to a 1-0 lead, the Terps rattled off five goals in a row with Cordingley and Leubecker scored twice in a row to bookend a goal by
Libby May.
• Maryland led 7-3 at halftime as Leubecker had three first-half goals.
• In the third quarter, Rutgers rallied back to within two at 7-5 on goals by Spills and Hartshorn with 10:53 left in the third quarter. Maryland scored the next three goals to close the quarter with a 10-5 lead for the Terps as Lipkin scored twice and Leubecker added her fourth of the game.
• The Terps outscored Rutgers 6-1 in the final period for the final of 16-6.
