Okada, Wyche Lift Terps To Fifth Win In Row, 2-1

CHARLOTTE, NC – Maryland softball rallied for its fifth win in a row with a 2-1 victory over Villanova in eight innings as part of the Queen City Classic at Sue M. Daughtridge Stadium on Friday afternoon. 

The Terps (9-6) took the lead in the top of the eighth as Taylor Okada drove in Mackense Greico with a single up the middle with two outs. Greico doubled with one out and advanced to third on groundout by Haley Ellefson

In the bottom of the eighth, Courtney Wyche finished off one of the best performances of her career by retiring the final three batters of the game including two strikeouts to finish with a career-high 16 strikeouts. 

Villanova fell to 7-10 overall. 

Wyche Stars In The Circle
  • Wyche scattered six hits over eight innings while fanning a career-high 16 Wildcats. She did not allow an earned run and walked just one batter. 
  • It was the third time in her career and the second time this season that Wyche struck out double-figure batters.
  • She struck out 10 against Monmouth on Feb. 25 earlier this season. 
  • She set her previous a career-high with 15 Ks against Evansville on Feb. 22, 2020. 

Breaking Down The Action
  • Villanova took a 1-0 lead on an unearned run in the first inning as Ally Jones singled home Paige Rauch. 
  • The Terps tied the game at 1-1 as Mackense Greico doubled and scored on a pinch-hit double by Haley Ellefson in the top of the sixth inning. 
  • Maryland captured the win with the run in the eighth. 

Extra, Extra
  • The Terps played their second extra-inning game of the season, winning their first. 
  • Maryland dropped a 6-5 decision in 10 innings on Feb. 12.
