No. 24 Terps Club Four Homers In 8-6 Win Over VCU

COLLEGE PARK, MD -- The No. 24 Maryland baseball team hit four home runs as they slugged their way to an 8-6 win over the VCU Rams on Tuesday at Bob 'Turtle' Smith Stadium. Switch hitter Chris Alleyne led the way with two home runs, one from the right side of the plate and one from the left. Nick LorussoĀ and Bobby ZmarzlakĀ each hit homers as well.

The TerpsĀ (10-2) tallied 10 hits with TroyĀ SchrefflerĀ Jr. going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.Ā ZmarzlakĀ had two hits, two runs scored and an RBI. Alleyne with the Terps' other multi-hit batter with those two homers.Ā 

The TerpsĀ rallied from a 6-5 deficit in theĀ sixth inning as a two-run double by ShligerĀ doubled down the leftfield line to bring homeĀ Schreffler andĀ Zmarzlak.

VCU is now 3-8.Ā 

Bullpen Doing Work
  • The TerpsĀ bullpen was strong with four pitchers finishing the game with four scoreless innings.Ā 
  • Matt Orlando earned the win in relief as he didn't allow a run in the sixth inning.Ā 
  • Sean Heine struck out three in two innings of work.
  • Then Nick Lorusso and Will Glock finished the game out with Glock getting the save with a strikeout and groundout to close the game.Ā 

By The Numbers
  • 2: It was Alleyne's first multi-home run game since hit had two vs. Stetson on 3/10/2019.
  • 3: Shliger'sĀ three RBIs, matches his career-high most-recently done vs. Michigan last weekend.Ā 
  • 3:Ā SchrefflerĀ had three hits or more in a game for the second time this season, as he had a career-high four vs. Delaware last Tuesday.

Breaking Down The Game
  • The Terps jumped out to a 2-0 lead on solo homers by Alleyne and Lorusso in the first inning.
  • VCU took a 3-2 lead in the third on a two-run homer by Tyler Locklear.
  • Alleyne quickly answered with his second bomb in his second at-bat to tie the game at 3-3.
  • Both teams scored two runs in a wild fourth inning. After VCU grabbed a 5-3 lead,Ā ZmarzlakĀ bashed a homer on a 2-2 count. Then a Shliger groundout scoredĀ Schreffler to tie the game again at 5-5.
  • VCU took a 6-5 lead in the fifth on a single by Barrett to score Logan Amiss.
  • Schliger's two-run double in the sixth regained the Terps' edge at 7-6.
  • ThenĀ Schreffler's single scored Maxwell Costes in the seventh for the two-run cushion.Ā
