No. 23 Terps Fall 4-3 To Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS, MN – The No. 23 Maryland baseball team dropped the series finale against the Minnesota Golden Gophers 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at Siebert Field. The Terps (25-7, 4-2 Big Ten) gave up a run in the bottom of the eighth on a passed ball that proved to be the difference. 

Down by two runs in the seventh, Maryland managed to tie the game on the backs of RBI singles from Chris Alleyne and Nick Lorusso

Troy Schreffler Jr. went 3-4 with an RBI double in the second inning, followed by a single and a drag bunt. Luke Shliger also had a multi-hit game, going 2-5 with a pair of singles. Alleyne finished the game 2-4 with an RBI single.  

Jason Savacool started on the mound for the Terps and seven six innings, striking out seven batters and allowing three runs. 

Breaking Down The Action
  • The Gophers grabbed the first two runs of the game on back-to-back hits in the first inning, but Shaw and Schreffler Jr. put hits together in the top of the first to cut the deficit to 2-1.
  • Minnesota added another run in the fourth inning after a walk and an RBI double. 
  • Maryland got into the Gopher bullpen and immediately capitalized on it as Alleyne singled to score Keister, making the score 3-2. 
  • Nick Lorusso drove in Shliger just two pitchers to knot the game at three apiece in the seventh inning. 
  • The Gophers run in the eighth on a passed ball sealed the game for the home team.
Notable Numbers
  • 12: Matt Shaw extended his hit streak to 12 games in a row.
  • 32: Nick Lorusso extended his on-base streak to 32 games in a row as the transfer from Villanova has reached base in every game this season.
